“Explore Myrtle Beach with Finesse!”

Along the far-reaching stretch of Grand Strand coastline, Myrtle Beach State Park sits nestled among oceanfront maritime forest. A quiet, and surprisingly green, escape from the otherwise bustling beach, the park provides educational opportunities, a nature trail and some of the best surf fishing South Carolina has to offer as well as stunning ocean views and another great fishing spot on Myrtle Beach pier. As far as Myrtle Beach campgrounds go, the parks’ is among the most popular, providing guests with Myrtle Beach pier and shoreline access as well as cozy sites tucked away under the towering trees. If the Myrtle Beach campgrounds aren’t for you, overnight guests may also stay in one of six rental cabins, built by the CCC in the 1930s.

First impression when entering this park is "wow, very nice" The drive in is beautifully landscaped in a natural way. Round the bend and there is the ocean, the smile gets bigger.

OK, so by the time you reach your spot the wow factor drops a bit. Seems to be an older park that was not planed out as well as almost all the others I have been in. Seems to be a bit more of the local flavor, to which I will be blunt, .. the locals are not eager to make eye contact let alone say hello.
Weekends gets busy, which for me is nice as there is a younger crowd and more people watching. My site was on loop 5, which is the best loop if you want a bit more privacy, .. which in this park is a little hard to come by. There are full hookup sites scattered around loop 1, 2, maybe 3. All other are 30amp and water. Again, the bad planning here is that the hookups are near the middle of most spots, so for me I could not back in as far as I would have liked. Have a long power cord at this State Park.
Drive or walk, or a combo of both to the beach. Yes, the beach is part of the park, but being on loop five I found it better to drive up the the parking lot. Beach is very nice. I went for the beach and it was worth it.
Staff are all very nice people. No booze allowed, yet the dumpster usually have assorted empty bottles in it every morning. :)

So, yes, this is a pretty nice park, but here is the worst part. It's under the jet traffic for the very nearby Myrtle Beach International Airport. You get use to it and it's not horrendous, but I left a day early because it was just more then I wanted to deal with. Depending on wind it could get quite loud. Also, you can hear the traffic noise from the main road.

I pickup park WiFi, and being I have a wifi booster antenna, I was able to watch Netflix, .. but my neighbors had issues. Cell service is poor with Verizon. I received maybe 10 digital TV channels also.

Nice park but we couldn't get full hookups so we had to dump a few times, big pain! We could get the coach level and the ground is too soft for jacks so we had to go buy wood to drive on, something I hate doing with a larger coach. We moved to a second site that was gravel and it was sloped so bad it was hard to level but at least the jacks didn't sink.

Being in the woods we had a lot of tree droppings and needed to wash the coach when we left.

Very tight spots and I was very annoyed they put tent campers on full hook up sites?

There was a lot of highway noise but it was a 10 minute walk to the beach.

I wouldn't go back unless it was for a short stay.

We just spent eight days at Myrtle Beach State Park in South Carolina. We were there during the spring bike week. I have read previous reviews and would agree with them that the sites are gravel, many are not very level, and the hookups are mid-way down the site. The sites are tight but most sites had shrubs or small trees growing between the sites which aided in privacy. The amenities and activities at the state park are great. Wi-Fi was also great (using a Wi-Fi booster). Some of the amenities offered at the park that we participated in included: birding, pier fishing, crabbing, observing leatherback sea turtles as they migrated north (awesome, were told this happens in May), walking trails, and other outdoor activities. The pier store also had hand-dipped ice cream! State Park staff were very friendly and helpful. When we moved sites to 142, we had an issue with power. Park staff came out, checked the 30-amp breaker and within 15 minutes replaced the breaker and had us up and going again.

Campground hosts (volunteers) were also very kind and helpful. This park, because it is so large, had quite a few hosts doing everything from checking in campers to cleaning out fire pits. They were all super-friendly.

After reading the reviews, I would agree that the biggest setback was the nearby airport traffic and helicopters. One of us is a disabled Veteran and stayed in the RV most of the day. The noise was frustrating at times. Fortunately, the noise stopped by 11:00 pm but usually started back up by 6:00 most mornings. Overall, we enjoyed the experience and would certainly return there because the sheer beauty of the surroundings, the blessing we received each day far outweighs the airport noise.

If you prefer camping with lots of space between you and your neighbor and only the sounds of birds and wildlife, Myrtle Beach State Park is probably not for you. Now, if you are looking for a reasonable priced place to park your RV while you enjoy the amazing seaside of Myrtle Beach, then this might be the place for you. The facilities are clean and relatively modern, lots of fun stuff to do with the kids (nature center, pier fishing, nature trails, playgrounds) and there's even a camp store that has all the kinds of stuff you'd need (s'mores supplies, bug spray, etc.). Ranger staff was really nice as well.

The spots are really cramped together, practically on top of each other. In many cases your RV is back to back with someone else's and your luck to have 30 feet width for your RV and picnic table. Only other bad thing is that the park is directly in the flight path of an airport, so you hear about 5-10 large jets take-off everyday, maybe 1 or 2 during the night.

There is laundry, but of the 5 dryers only 3 were working, and of those only 1 would dry your load with a single cycle; the other 2 required 2-3 cycles at $1.25 each.

We'd stay here again just for the beach. Lots of sea shells if you're into collecting them. Waves for body surfing most days. Sand isn't dirty at all, and the beach itself is very easy to get to from the main camping area.

First - this is an 'off season' review - we stayed during the month of February into the first week of March. Honestly, we probably would *not* seek this place out during the 'on season', which I expect starts in April and runs through October. The park did fill up on weekends (not to brimming, but pretty full), and sites are pretty close, so it would be tough if you got stuck next to a crowd that you weren't expecting or appreciative of (personally, I love some late night Lynyrd Skynyrd...ok, maybe not).

We stayed for a month plus a little extra; I believe during 'on season' the limit is 2 weeks, but during 'off season' you can get a monthly rate and stay for however long you want - you just need to move sties every 30 days.

Park has both sewer & non-sewer sites - all sites have 50A & water hook-ups.

Let's get the good out of the way first.

Miles of gorgeous beach is within a short walk of any campsite. The sunrises can be life altering. Sometimes you find a bunch of dead jellyfish hanging out on the beach, which is cool if you never get to see a bunch of dead jellyfish. Also, you can just walk from your site and plop down on the beach for the day if that is what you choose to do. Sometimes we chose to do that.

Some of the campsites are really nice - all seem to be 'workable'. The first site we stayed in (224) was a bit tight for our stupidly big rig (40'). It's all good though - still plenty of room for lawn chairs and a campfire (guilty- we don't usually do campfires anyways). We only had neighbors on weekends, and even on weekends sometimes we didn't have any buddies pull in next to us, so we didn't usually feel claustrophobic. Our second site (they make you move after 30 days in the off-season) 224 was plenty spacious and set-back nicely. I bet that one is popular. Anyways, both sites were level. Both sites had 50A & water. Also, the sites in the back of the park (non-sewer) tended to be larger than those with full-hookups near the front. And not as busy.

There are two dump stations, and the bathrooms/showers are fine, so no worries. Also, they have a nice laundry room ($1.50 wash/$1.25 dry) - even if most of the machines were out-of order during our stay.

The campground is nicely wooded, which keeps the breeze/wind from the ocean at bay. The beautiful shrubbery also makes driving a 'stupid big' RV through the rear campground loops a little concerning (to me), but it's very doable.

The park is a very short drive (or a longer bike) to downtown Myrtle Beach, or to Market Commons.

The not as good:

The fees here are a little bit ridiculous. We got a monthly 'half-off' rate (again, off season perk) and were pretty stoked. Then, they added a Reserve America fee of $1.94 per night (what? What is this?!) - and you have to reserve through Reserve America. Only choice. In addition, there is an accommodation tax, a local accommodation tax, and an education tax. Cool, I like education... but, our base $32/night rate quickly became $38. So, just be wary that the advertised rate is not 'fee free'.

The sites are closer together than many State Parks, but not ridiculously so. (opinion)

Sometimes airplanes flew overhead and were a little loud. It wasn't an overly frequent occurrence (maybe 2 per hour in the morning and evening). Sometimes the planes were actually fighter jets and you could pretend to be in a live action movie.

That's about all of the 'not as good' we experienced. We really loved this park. Great running/biking opportunities. Great beaching opportunities. Good cell service to make those $$ during the day. Park WiFi wasn't horrible (even in the back of the park) the few times I jumped on. The park office sells YooHoo, which is one of the most thirst quenching beverages on the market. We fully endorse staying here in the off-season.

Really great spot to be close to the beach and close to the town of myrtle beach. Spots are large and fairly level. It is located south of the airport so you will hear planes rumbling overhead a few Times a day but they aren't super annoying or anything.
*** save some money: You can book by calling the park directly instead of using reserve America and having to pay their extra fee. Lots of big rv's here. Sites have some trees to give a little privacy. Great camp store located on the property for incidentals.
Clean bathrooms and showers are great.

Some reviews mention small sites, but both pf ours were plenty roomy and with a decent amount of privacy. We did notice that other sections of the park were very tight and small with neighbors on top of one another. There were airplanes overhead but honestly we hardly noticed them. We enjoyed walking on the nature trails, biking around the park and into town and the beautiful beach. Also don’t miss Brookgreen garden where one is treated to some of the most beautiful sculptures this side of Italy!

Site 155 fit our 40 ft 5er and was very private, water + 30 amp. 5 minute walk to the beach. Dogs allowed on beach before 10 am and after 5 pm. As mentioned in other posts, there are a lot of small sites. The restrooms were clean and nice.
The 1 mile of beach without any houses or condo's was great. Nice park with picnic tables, pavilion and playground. Park has Wifi and it worked pretty good. Food Lion store about 1 mile from park.

3 star on Noise because of all of the jets taken off over the park. Some at 2 AM

The SC parks need to improve there sites like Georgia State parks with timbers outlining trailer site and being level.

Our site was level and roomy, but neighbors and all sides were pretty close. Water, electric, and sewer functioned well. One neighbor appeared to have been in site for a while and had outdoor freezer, refidgerator and even a canvas carport. Another actually asked me to move our Jeep as it was blocking their view and air flow!
Used Laundry here and it was clean and reasonably priced. Since we were on first loop, we didn’t really see other loops. We were here in early September just before Hurricane Florence was expected to come a shore. So we had to leave at 5 am on our planned departure day, to try and beat some of the traffic at the noon mandatory evacuation time.
Beach was a short walk from our site. Beach was clean and not to crowded this time of year. Park is close to grocery store and Myrtle Beach proper.

Date of Camping - 4/19/2016 to 4/24/2016. If you want someplace on the beach (mostly) and easy access to all that is Myrtle Beach, then this is the place. Not too costly for this area.
