“collecting & preserving automotive history”
Lane Motor Museum is one of the few museums in the U.S. to specialize in European cars. It is a working museum with the goal of maintaining all vehicles in running order. Some cars are in showroom condition, while others represent typical aging. Efforts are made to restore each vehicle to near-original specifications. The Museum has been developed in a well-known Nashville landmark, the former Sunbeam Bakery at 702 Murfreesboro Pike. Home to the bread company beginning in 1951, the 132,000 square-foot facility was the largest and most modern bakery in the area at the time of its opening. The bakery building, outfitted for the museum’s needs but left with many of its original characteristics, has a high ceiling, natural light, and hand-crafted brick and maple wood flooring. The architectural style complements the age of the cars represented. The main floor has approximately 40,000 square feet of open space, ideal for displaying the collection.
This place is fantastic, don't be surprised if you spend twice as much time here as you'd originally planned. Even if you aren't a "car person" you'll enjoy yourself. It's particularly fantastic that the cars aren't corded off and the windows are all down, so you can easily get up close and see the interiors and all the details. If you like micro-cars, admire fine craftsmanship in old classics, or just like to shake your head at oddities, you'll be in car heaven!
It's nice that all the cars are not behind a velvet rope. It's very satisfying to be able to glance inside the interiors, or under a front bumper to win a bet with your friends, that, 'yes in fact, that model was front wheel drive and here's the proof. :-)
The variety is very broad. No big muscle cars or any American for that matter, (except a sweet Viper) but that's just fine. You'll find many conversation pieces to discuss. If rare/odd cars are your forte, you'll be in heaven! Tatra's, Auto Unions, Fiat's, Bubble cars, unique Japanese imports (new and classic) and a few one-offs that will amaze even the least interested in car design.
Motorcycles galore!!! (Not a motorcycle guy, but I will say there are some odd-balls, i.e. a rotary motorbike)
The gift shop even had rare and unique model cars and books that I wish I had budgeted for during my visit. :-(
