Hobuck Beach Resort

This is a first come first serve campground, so come early to get the prime spots near the beach. The bathrooms have only one stall but are kept clean.

There are two sections to this campground: A large field area for dispersed dry camping (both tents and RVs) and a full-hookups RV park area about a half mile further down the road.

I stayed in the dry campground area. It is adjacent to the ocean, and you can hear it but not see it from most areas of the field. The woods surrounding the non-ocean side of the campground are lovely to look at. The roads inside the camping area are extremely rutted. There is little privacy, but campers seemed respectful of other campers' space and spaced themselves out well throughout the area.

It's very close to the Cape Flattery trailhead, which is a must. There is an excellent cultural museum about the Makah Tribe (Neah Bay is a Makah reservation area), and a wonderful place to buy smoked salmon (Take Home Fish) in town. Shi Shi Beach is also nearby. For these things, this place is a great stopover for a day or two, but I wouldn't be inspired to stay here longer.

The full hook-ups campground area down the road has full ocean views. The sites are all in a row in an open area and are relatively close together. $30/n seems like a good deal for the view + full hookups.

Excellent 4G Verizon reception here. No AT&T.

Hobuck Beach has 2 camping areas: an open field for dispersed tent or dry camping ($20/night) and 10 full hook up sites for RVs ($30/night) about 1/4 mile down the road from the dispersed camping area. We stayed in a full hook-up site with a beautiful ocean view. Sites are a little close for our liking but everything was well maintained. Nearby Neah Bay is small, so if you're looking for lots to do in town this isn't the place for you. Lots of hiking & beach combing though. The highway to Neah Bay is narrow & twisting without shoulders in many places, so larger rigs need to exercise care. No AT&T service here, but Verizon 4G LTE was strong, with 24.14 Mbps down & 17.71 up. Park WiFi is free but signal strength varies with your location. The campground & Neah Bay are within Makah Tribal Lands, and we were also required to purchase a $10 vehicle pass for our towed.

I love this park because of its scenery and proximity to the ocean – which were amazing. And we could hear the ocean from inside our rig. The benefit of staying here during the off-season (late October is when we stayed) is that the park wasn’t crowded (only 4 other RVs during our stay). I’m not sure I would love this place as much during the busier months. The RV sites itself are nothing fancy; it’s a gravel lot with full hookups. But we were able to look out our bedroom window to see the ocean, and the beach was only 50 ft. from our front door. There was a lot of beach exploring to be done.

There are cabins located on the other half of the same lot along with a public bathroom and shower, one for women and the other for men. Down the road from the full hook-up RV lot is a big field for dry camping that costs $20. It doesn’t have an ocean view but the beach can be accessed. There was a Port-a-John in the dry camping area. For us it was worth the extra $10 to have an ocean view, in fact so worth it we stayed there for two nights (and we rarely stay at RV parks).

We found a free Wi-Fi connection in our site but it was temperamental. We did have good cell signal.

Cape Flattery trailhead is only 5 miles from this RV park. A Makah Recreation Pass is required to park at the trailhead parking lot since it’s on Makah Indian Reservation. I am not clear if the pass is also necessary if you are just staying at the RV park. The $10 pass can be purchased at the RV park office and is good for the calendar year.

The road that the RV park office is on is a little slow going due to a handful of potholes. Tip – take the road parallel to this park office road on your way out (or in after you’ve paid for your site) because it’s a lot smoother.

A decent portion of Hwy 112 from Sekiu to Neah Bay was a tight and twisty – it was nerve-wracking to drive that section in towing our rig. In addition to that, the locals had the tendency to whip around those corners. We wouldn’t recommend this road to people with large rigs. But for whatever reason the drive back out felt easier.

The price of the ocean front sites has now increased to $40. There are only 10 sites (pretty close to each others that are down the road from the official campground. It is by a beautiful Beach where it is nicer to swim (with a wetsuit!). Note that if the 10 RV sites are taken, you can camp in an open field by the campground for $20/night with access to out houses and showers and close to the beach (no ocean view). However, the sites are not marked (it's an open field), so on weekends or in the high season, it gets pretty crowded and noisy.

As a first come first served park, we arrived around noon on a Friday to give ourselves a good shot at a site since the website says check in is at 1pm. Surprisingly we were only the 2nd folks in the RV portion (10 total hookup sites). The Indian Tribe requires an annual recreation/use permit for $10 and the RV Park sells them. The road in is long, winding, and poorly paved so be prepared for lots of bumps and bouncing, especially with a trailer whether properly loaded or not. Take your time and enjoy the ride because going even the speed limit in some sections is much too fast.

The RV sites are about 1/2 a mile from the office and collocated with some cabins they rent and this turned out to be a good thing because the giant field behind the office is an open space for tent campers and it looked like mayhem; no defined spaces so it’s a camp wherever environment with porta johns.

Site 4 was perfectly level for us which made setting up easier. The fire pits are in odd places and not really pits so much as rocks in a circle on top of the ground. The hookups are not traditional in that they are in pairs so depending on how you park, your door will likely face your neighbor so there is not as much privacy as most parks. Sites 1-3 appear to be the best options as they are larger.

Unfortunately the weather was lackluster all 3 days with a heavy fog/mist blowing in off the ocean and temps in the mid-50s, which surprised us for late June, but we still enjoyed the stay. Next time we’ll check the almanac! No cable hookups that I noticed and it would have been nice given the weather kept us inside in the evenings.

Short drive to the Shi Shi Beach trailhead and Cape Flattery. 10 mins to town for restaurants and grocery. I’d stay here again depending on weather forecast.

A simple campground with hookups. Only a few RV spots and first come first serve. There was an additional $20 fee to be on the Reservation which I didn’t mind, but also didn’t expect. Ocean roaring and no highway nearby to block it out.

Bottom line is that this place is FIVE STARS if you are a lover of insane ocean views and a 60 second walk to what is, for all intents and purposes, your own private 1/2 mile of oceanfront beach and some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen.

MY STAY: I was here for seven straight days (9/17 to 9/24) and if I could stay another week, I would have. Here are some quick tips that you will thank me for later on getting here: When you are coming in on Route 112, right before the town of Neah Bay, Google Maps told me to take Backtrack Road, but there is actually a pretty big sign on the ground that literally tells you DO NOT TAKE THIS ROAD. Believe the sign! You can still get there if you do take that road, but your rig is probably going to be in 50 pieces due to the potholes and ruts. Stay on Cape Flattery Road/Route 112 and follow the signs in town that guide you to Hobuck - BUT, once you turn left onto Hobuck Road you will come to this awkward/unaligned 4-way stop. Google tells you to turn right here to go to the office (as do all the signs) to get to Hobuck...DO NOT DO IT! It will put you on a little over a 1/2 mile stretch of the worst road you have ever been on...it was BRUTAL! What you want to do is go STRAIGHT like you are going to the other RV spot (Hide Away RV Park) as that road it completely paved/smooth and actually dumps you right in front of the Hobuck RV entrance which will be right in front of you. I wish I would have known this before coming down that other road...I had stuff all over the floor of my trailer when I opened it up after parking.

Another key logistical point: You don't want to stop at the office first because you don't have to - and you will risk someone else driving right by you and possibly getting the last available spot. Get your spot first (if you can) and then head to the office to pay/register/buy your Makah Recreation Pass/etc. There are only 10 spots and it is first-come-first-served with no reservations. The other reason you don't want to hit the office first is that you have to get out on that unpaved/war-torn stretch of rutted road. Also, if there aren't spots available, what I saw two people do, is to simply park on the grassy area immediately to the right when you enter the park and then just wait for someone to leave and then quickly jump into that spot. A brilliant approach if you have the time, and patience, to wait it out. I was in Spot #7 and got the only open spot when I rolled in on September 17th...lucky #7 I guess! Today is the 24th and it is a ghost town...7 open spots.

INTERNET: If you have Starlink you will be LOVING LIFE as I was getting speeds up to 190Mbps down and 35Mbps up...in addition, both my AT&T and T-Mobile hotspots were getting great reception. AT&T was excellent with 4 bars of LTE (never got 5G) and T-Mobile was 2 bars of 5G. Verizon was all over the place. In the trailer I was getting a solid 3-4 bars of LTE consistently...walked down to the beach (not even 100 yards from where the trailer is parked) and it was 2 bars of 5G on the left side of the beach...walked to the right side, 4 bars of 5G. I never used their wifi (didn't need to) or facilities.

SPOTS/RATE/PASS: There isn't a ton of space between the sites, but you aren't on top of each other either. There is a nice fence-type thing between the sites as well...but it won't matter because you are always looking at the beach the entire time anyway :-) I also noticed someone posted that the nightly rate is $70/night...that is not completely correct. So, it is $50 a night (which, for this location with full hookups is crazy awesome) but you also need to purchase (one time for your stay) the Makah Recreation Pass. You can get that pass at the office when you check-in/pay and it is $20. I guess there are two ways to look at it...$70 for your first night and $50 for all the other nights, or $50/night with the $20 for the pass spread over the days you are staying. Anyway, it is only $50 a night. You are also only 15 minutes from the Cape Flattery Trail which was just breathtaking...I put a few photos below. Super easy 1.5 mile out and back with views that are absolutely breathtaking.

Bottom line is that this place is 5-stars all the way and I am already trying to work it back into my schedule for next summer. I gave 'Access' below 4-stars as they should have a sign or something at the 4-way stop, if you are going to the RV Park, to continue straight and then come to the office. One of the best stops of the year by far!!!

They have multiple outhouses through out the camp area. The cabins are set to the back of the camp area and tent camping is closer to the beach. There is some tree coverage with paths that lead down to the beach. You can hear the waves all night. The night we camped there was a heavy fog that reached the bushes behind us. We stayed warm and dry. Easy check in after hours. They accept cash and check in envelopes similar to the state park system. For CC you have to wait until the office opens in the morning to pay, but can still camp. The area is monitored by security cameras. Beautiful location.
