“the best of the new haven waterfront”

In 1924 the City of New Haven purchased Lighthouse Point Park from the East Shore Amusement Company. City residents came to the park to enjoy swimming, ferry boat rides to Savin Rock, track meets, football games, field days and baseball leagues in the old grandstand/ballpark. The park, in the roaring 20’s, attracted legends Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb to Sunday afternoon games. The hurricane of 1938 ripped through the park, destroying many buildings and trees. In 1950 the City was able to make major improvements at the park including a new bathhouse, a first aid station and concession stands. A small amusement park was added and the beach was greatly improved. Today, the park attracts thousands to the public beach to enjoy the beauty of Long Island Sound. Devoted anglers take advantage of the fishing pier and a public boat launch that is available for leisure craft. Picnic tables dot the grounds, shaded by trees and pavilions. Kids can enjoy the playground and swings. The park is one of the most popular spots for bird watching along the East Coast. Each fall and spring, thousands of song birds and birds of prey are seen in the migratory oasis along Morris Creek. In the fall, our park rangers and various ornithological groups conduct research and provide bird migration programs for park visitors.

Since I am from out of state I was going to have to pay $30 to enter the park. I just wanted to drive in for a little bit so it definitely wasn't worth it. Quite sad that it was that much.

Beautiful location to look out at the water and generally take in lovely seaside Connecticut. I'd say definitely not worth the $30 price tag, though. Maybe you can find another nearby beach to explore instead.

We went on a Tuesday afternoon in September and were not required to pay anything to get in (I guess. No one was at the gate to collect our money). That being said the lighthouse tour and carousel were both closed and not accessible to the public. The area itself is nice and we were able to take a lot of great pictures. The lighthouse was nice, but I was a little underwhelmed, as it was not very large or ornate. I don't know if I would pay $30, as some precious reviewers indicated was the admission price, but it was a nice ocean-viewing spot. Also: the restrooms were very clean for park restrooms, which is always a good thing!

I got lucky and found a review that told me people from out of state have to pay $30 to enter the park! No way I was going to pay $30 just to drive in and catch a glimpse of a lighthouse. That's ridiculous. Glad I didn't spend the hour driving there before I found this out!

Probably best to go in warmer months, although there was no fee in November. It got dark early, so we didn't get to do much exploring by the lighthouse. They had some sort of lights display for the holiday, but I don't think it was all set up yet. We were stopping at most parks, lighthouses, and beaches along the coast. This wasn't one of our favorites, but it was okay.

Lighthouse was nice and pretty busy. $30 for an entry fee.
