Iconic Attraction

Our Take

The French Quarter's St. Louis Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in the country. It even predates America, having been founded in 1720. It's an iconic photo op, and the plaza in front is always bustling with activity, especially at night, when it truly comes alive. It's worth stopping inside, even if you don't need to repent and pray for forgiveness from a rowdy night on Bourbon Street, because the interior is beautiful.

“The oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the United States”

Few cities in the world are so identified by a building as is New Orleans. The city is instantly recognized by our cathedral and its position overlooking Jackson Square. The Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis King of France is the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the United States. As the caretakers of the Historic place of worship, we constantly battle the elements and the aging of the Cathedral with ongoing conservation and restoration. The Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, also called St. Louis Cathedral (French: Cathédrale Saint-Louis, Roi de France), is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans; it has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating cathedral in the (as now constituted) United States. The first church on the site was built in 1718; the third, built in 1789, was raised to cathedral rank in 1793. The cathedral was expanded and largely rebuilt in 1850, with little of the 1789 structure remaining.

Really pretty building. Lots to see in the area - lots of nice architecture abounds. The carriage ride we caught out front was well worth it. You can spend a week or more in town and have a great time. Go around in the trolley, see the botanical garden, sculpture garden, etc... Make sure to get a Muffelatta sandwich at Central Grocery when in town!

Beautiful inside and out! Mass was also beautiful. It's quite something to be inside and are able to hear to all the music on the streets.

We arrived at Jackson Square a little early for our tour so we decided to check out the interior of St Louis Cathedral. The inside is beautiful and they have little brochures for self guided tours. We only had about 15 minutes. We looked around at some of the very beautiful artwork. Adults could probably spend an hour or so looking around but the kids were done after about 10 minutes. We went ahead an left before they could get noisy.

Cathedral was beautiful! To enter is free, so why not go in and look around.
