“a traditional coffee shop”
The Original French Market Coffee Stand was established in 1862 in the French Market. The Cafe is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It closes only on Christmas day, and when the occasional hurricane passes too close to New Orleans.
The Original Café Du Monde is a traditional coffee shop. Its menu consists of dark roasted Coffee and Chicory, Beignets, White and Chocolate Milk, and fresh squeezed Orange Juice. The coffee is served Black or Au Lait. Au Lait means that it is mixed half and half with hot milk. Beignets are square French -style doughnuts, lavishly covered with powdered sugar. In 1988 Iced Coffee was introduced to the cafe. Soft drinks also made their debut that year.
Without a doubt the most touristy thing you can do while in New Orleans. That said, their beignets are out of this world and where, without a doubt, the best I had while in New Orleans. Expect a line. Cash Only. Quick and efficient.
Very touristy but if you want to try it, go late a night after some drinks ;) The other beignets around town are just as good. Grab some dough and iced coffee and head over to the canal to watch some boats
Very crowded, but worth the trip. Table service is quick, since when you order you pay when your waitress brings it. We had coffee and beignets. One order was plenty for the three of us, since they are very sweet and loaded with sugar. We compared the beignet's taste to a funnel cake.
Almost always pretty busy, but the iced coffee was pretty refreshing and the beignets were amazing! I could go for a beignet any time of the day. Do have cash and check it out!
Yes it can get crowded and sort of totally covered in powdered sugar, but the beignets are so damn tasty. And try a cafe au lait with the chicory coffee...it's not for everyone, but when in Rome...
Cafe du Monde is everything New Orleans, it's bustling with life at all hours and is always an interesting treat. You come here for the beignets, the coffee, and to people watch. The perfect place to take it all in- just don't wear black.
Very Touristy, heavy traffic. I love the environment here. Bought my beignets to go then I can eat it by the river.
Best beignets in New Orleans!
Super busy and cash only, it's worth the wait for those yummy beignets though.
Delicious! We were fortunate to get a table right away but would have waited if necessary. Be sure to have cash, although there's an ATM very close.
