“Drink where Faulkner Drank!”

The famous Carousel Bar & Lounge in the Hotel Monteleone is a long-time favorite New Orleans hotspot.  The classic New Orleans hotel bar is the city’s only revolving bar.  For decades, it has lured guests in to take a spin on the 25-seat, bright circus-clad Merry-Go-Round. The Carousel Bar overlooks famed Royal Street in the heart of the French Quarter.

Guests can enjoy the view through large fan windows.  This New Orleans hotel bar has long been a favorite of both locals and tourists. Installed in 1949, the Carousel Bar’s 25-seat bar turns on 2,000 large steel rollers, pulled by a chain powered by a one-quarter horsepower motor. Patrons circumnavigate at one revolution every 15 minutes, but the ride doesn’t end there. Since 1949, some of its riders’ most creative ideas, inspirations and business deals have been shaken and stirred to fruition here, not to mention some of the best spirits.

The Goody and The Vieux Carre Cocktail were first concocted at the Carousel Bar. This Carousel is the only one in New Orleans that you have to be 21 to ride! Explore the gallery below to see how the Carousel Bar & Lounge has changed throughout the years.  You can also see some cocktails inspired by the Carousel Bar’s heritage!

Furthermore, The Carousel is designated an official Literary Landmark. It boats an impressive literary roster of famous literary guests. Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, and Tennessee Williams have all tossed back a cocktail in this famous bar.

Truman Capote liked to brag that he was born here. Although not technically true, his mother was certainly living in the hotel when she went into labor. Located in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the Carousel is the only revolving bar in the city. Besides Capote, it has been frequented by such notables as Tennessee Williams, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and Winston Groom. Williams references it in The Rose Tattoo and Orpheus Descending.

Must-see in New Orleans. This bar created the famous Vieux Carre drink so make sure you get one. Also its a slow moving indoor carousel why wouldn't you go? The hotel is also haunted and beautiful. Stay there if you're rich and ballsy enough I guess.

It's pretty cool to checkout but I wouldn't hang at the bar. It's pretty touristy. I guess good people-watching!

The carousel bar is very cool and there is also some hip art on the walls, unfortunately, it was largely populated by bourgeois chumps. We stopped here, took some pictures and then turned around and left because in the two minutes we were there, we ran into two incredibly rude people, probably hiding in their pricy hotel because they were too scared to venture onto Bourbon St. Make it a daytime photo stop, head to Jean Lafitte's Piano Bar for your nighttime fix.

You may feel like a few potent potables at this quintessential watering hole have left you spinning, but that's actually just the bar revolving slowly around the room, true to its name. The proud home base of Tales of the Cocktail, the Carousel is hard to beat for a great Old Fashioned or Ramos Gin Fizz.
