“"Real Nawlin’ food"”

The restaurant isone of the hottest food tickets in town, known for its eclectic mix of Creole and Cajun specialties, at reasonable prices — its irrepressible owner/chef, Jacques Leonardi, who holds court each night dressed in a white chef's jacket, shorts and Birkenstock clogs. The place is decorated like a kaleidoscopic dream of Southeast Louisiana: a blue marlin arches over the entrance and a boar's head noshes on a Barbie Doll while Mardi Gras beads and Christmas lights glisten from the overhead light fixtures. A poster from "Southpark" here, a picture of the "Blessed Mother" there and, everywhere, paintings of local musicians. Reservations are only taken for parties of five or more up to 30 days in advance.

He may not be a NOLA native, but Jacques Leonardi has become something of a local celebrity for his inimitable gregariousness and his Oak St. restaurant. The menu features a heart-stopping alligator sausage cheesecake, as well as a dish called "Godzilla meets fried green tomatoes," a tower of fried soft shell crab on top of the Southern favorite held in place with a steak knife.

Colleagues took me here when I visited from the UK. The place has a friendly atmosphere and was pretty packed when I visited.

Amazing food and drink. The soft shell crab and the fried green tomatoes were to die for.

Since the place is pretty busy, people will be waiting for your seat so head down the street to the local bar and watch a live band afterwards.

The watermelon punch is great and the alligator cheesecake is to die for. There's always a wait, but it is well worth it!! I go every time I visit NOLA.
