“Fueling creativity and igniting minds, and providing inspiration”
The Museum of Modern Art is a place that fuels creativity, ignites minds, and provides inspiration. With extraordinary exhibitions and the world's finest collection of modern and contemporary art, MoMA is dedicated to the conversation between the past and the present, the established and the experimental. Our mission is helping you understand and enjoy the art of our time. Founded in 1929 by Lillie P. Bliss, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Mary Quinn Sullivan, and four other founding Trustees, The Museum of Modern Art was the first museum devoted to the modern era. Beginning with the innovative European art of the 1880s, the collection contains unparalleled holdings in every ensuing period of visual culture up to the present day, including such distinctly modern forms as film and industrial design in addition to more traditional mediums. Now numbering some 150,000 objects, the collection offers an unparalleled overview of modern and contemporary art.
Be sure you check out The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh as well as their small collection of Salvador Dali paintings. They also have a few large Jackson Pollock paintings that are pretty cool. Lots of great art to see!
There are free gallery talks, and tours offered daily. I think it's worth getting a tour because this museum is so fantastic. There's a free coat check service too, so you don't have to lug your jacket around. I'd recommend starting at the top of the museum and working your way down. There's also a super delicious cafe, chic restaurant and bar on site. You could honestly spend all day here. I'll be visiting myself pretty soon again and I plan on at least a few hours. Definitely bring money for the gift shop, cause there's so much awesome stuff to buy in there. I could do all my Christmas and birthday shopping there, every year.
This museum is worth it for Monet's Water Lilies alone. It's free on Friday nights, but be prepared for big crowds.
Free admission on Fridays from 4-7pm. It was pretty crowded but so worth it. So amazing to see so many famous works of art up close and personal.
