“Devoted to the art of the 20th century & beyond”
An internationally renowned art museum and one of the most significant architectural icons of the 20th century, the Guggenheim Museum is at once a vital cultural center, an educational institution, and the heart of an international network of museums. Visitors can experience special exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, lectures by artists and critics, performances and film screenings, classes for teens and adults, and daily tours of the galleries led by experienced docents. Founded on a collection of early modern masterpieces, the Guggenheim Museum today is an ever-growing institution devoted to the art of the 20th century and beyond.
Very cool place to visit in NY if only for the architecture alone! It's just across the street from Central Park so to combine the two makes for an awesome afternoon. Exhibitions change frequently, the museum is closed on Thursdays and Saturday nights you can "pay what you wish" rather than the standard $22 adult ticket. I usually avoid expensive museums but the Guggenheim is really worth it. I recommend taking the elevator all the way up and then working your way down the spiral ramp to look at all the artwork.
This stunning building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and is a must-see stop in its own rite. It also happens to be where Woody Allen and Diane Keaton’s characters meet in the movie "Manhattan."
Most NYC museums are closed on Mondays, but the Guggenheim is open, so it's pretty crowded that day. There's a free tour included with cost of admission. The best ways to experience the museum is from the top and work your way down. Restrooms in the lobby are usually very busy, so use the unisex ones upstairs. Kids under 12 are free.
