“Exploring the fascinating past of New York city”
Among the city’s museums there is only one with the words New, York, and City in its name, and this is precisely what makes this Museum unique: we explore the past of this fascinating and particular place for lessons about our future and we celebrate New York’s heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. The museum's collections include paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs featuring New York City and its residents, as well as costumes, decorative objects and furniture, toys, rare books and manuscripts, marine and military collections, police and fire collections, and a theater collection. I am happy to welcome you to the Museum of the City of New York. Among the city’s museums there is only one with the words New, York, and City in its name, and this is precisely what makes this Museum unique: we explore the past of this fascinating and particular place for lessons about our future and we celebrate New York’s heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. Whether you visit our landmark home on New York’s Museum Mile or enjoy the Museum online, you’ll discover that the Museum is addressing its present and its future in new ways. First, an $85 million expansion and modernization of our very outdated facility is well underway, with $68 million already secured. A three-level addition — a new curatorial center topped by the James G. Dinan and Elizabeth R. Miller Gallery — provides state-of-the-art climate control for our collections of photographs, prints, theater memorabilia, costumes, and more. With new offices on the fourth and fifth floors completed in August, 2010, construction is now focused on three floors of gallery space in the south wing, which will be ready in the fall of 2011. At the same time, we have been working hard to revitalize the mission of the Museum, with exhibitions that draw from the Museum’s collections and present cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary scholarship, engaging public and school programs, and publications.
