“vibrant and casual Latin restaurant”
Empanada Mama is a colorful, vibrant and casual Latin restaurant in the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan. The restaurant serves food of mostly Colombian influence, but also from all of Latin America. It’s intent is to serve great quality food of Latin homemade likeness, for an accessible and reasonable price, to attend the discerning needs of our diverse clientele. Our main product is our empanada. Not any empanada, but the mama of all empanadas – or the one just like a Latin mama would make it. A superior product, made with fresh ingredients, a bountiful variety of flavors and with different preparation methods and crusts to attend to different tastes and preferences. And there really is a chuck-full of delights offered by Mama. We are most certainly not limited to offering empanadas alone. There are also a variety of meals, served in its majority along with rice, beans and a side of salad. Among them are our famous arroz con pollo (chicken with shredded rice served with sweet plantains) and popular favorite, sancocho de cola (oxtail soup). Also our tapas (side dishes and snacks) from guacamole and plantain chips to fried yucca and tostones. Appetizers such as arepas (corn flour griddle cakes) stuffed with different fillings, salads (from our famous avocado salad to special summer offers, such as the watermelon and feta cheese salad); desserts, from our thoroughly appreciated dessert empanadas (like the chocolate and bananas and caramel and cheese) to flans. And finally drinks to accompany the feasts: such as natural fruit shakes, fruit cocktails and alcoholic beverages ahoy (from frozen margaritas, signature cocktails and beers to our famous red or white very generous sangria pitcher servings). In short, this is Empanada Mama. Ready even for catering orders for any kind of events, because Mama has been doing catering successfully as well. It really is a success story, with the only fault of reaching capacity many times over. So that patrons have to be asked to be patient enough, to wait for their turn to get a piece of what Mama always proudly has to offer.

My 2 cents: LOVE that this place is 24 hours! Who doesn't want to watch the sun come up on a summer morning, eating delicious Latin American fried food after a long night of drinking and dancing?! Or, you can always go for a nice afternoon lunch. We did both, and had a great experience each time. Our rented apartment was one block away, so we had the perfect location for grabbing some empanadas whenever we wanted. I made the mistake during our first visit of ordering a margarita (massive heartburn put a damper on the meal), and I have to say that my adventurous order of 'sour sap' wasn't a good choice, either. I'm sure their other margaritas are fine, but I would definitely steer clear of that flavor. The empanadas are great (tuna-jalapeño was my favorite), the menu is incredibly diverse and fun to look through, and the service was so-so. It was a little hole-in-the-wall like several spots in NYC, but it just added to the character. Will definitely be back for more empanadas!
