Iconic Attraction

Our Take

The beautiful architecture and ornate ceiling make this a great place to catch a train. It’s a truly impressive and incredibly detailed example of the architecture and design from the era, and it’s luckily survived to the present. That all being said, it’s definitely best experienced if you’re traveling through here.

“moving us for 100 years”

Reborn as "Grand Central Station," the reconfigured depot’s most prominent feature was undoubtedly its enormous train shed.  Constructed of glass and steel, the 100-foot wide by 650-foot long structure rivaled the Eiffel Tower and Crystal Palace for primacy as the most dramatic engineering achievement of the 19th century.  The updated station also featured a "classical" façade, a unified 16,000 square foot waiting room, and distinctive ornamentation, including monumental cast-iron eagles with wingspans of 13-feet (In fact, one of these eagles was recently salvaged and will rise again above Grand Central Terminal’s new entrance at 43rd Street and Lexington Avenue and the other one can be found on the corner of 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue).

Take a moment to learn about the restoration that has been done to this building before you visit. You will appreciate the architecture a lot more. When you get to the main terminal make sure you look up! The original ceiling is absolutely gorgeous.

Grand Central Station is really stunning, if you're lucky enough to catch a train from one of the 47 platforms (I think making it one of the largest in the world), you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. If you aren't catching a train, you should still stop in for a look at this ridiculously majestic building with a turquoise and gold ceiling. Tons of trains to all over the place leave from here, if you're up for a day trip I highly recommend catching a train up to the Dia Beacon Museum in Beacon, NY. It's a beautiful, 80 minute train ride and a great day-trip from the city. Catch any train upstate for that matter and enjoy the scenery!

There is no train station more famous in the world. Even if you're not planning to go anywhere via train, make the stop and see the inside of this magnificent building. My favorite part was standing atop the stairs, people watching, but replaying movie scenes in my head that place there. This along with the Statue of Liberty, MSG, a few other places in NYC really just say New York.

I've only walked through here a few times, but the size is remarkable and the amount of traffic is crazy. I agree with Josh Green, people watching is a really fun way to pass the time because you will see some unique people.

The high ceiling, the flags, the bustling people, everything about Grand Central Station is magical. When you're not in a rush, it's fun to pretend you're back in time when trains were the way to travel.

There's also a food market inside selling tons of lunch options. It's pretty packed at lunchtime but I got some Vietnamese rolls (curried shrimp and blackened cod) for $3 each...and cheap meals in NY are hard to come by!

Totally agree with Janet about reading up on its restoration. This was one of my top 5 places I visited my first time in NYC. You can stand on an upper deck and just watch the whole world go by. The scale and the beauty are incredible too. Lives up to all the hype!

It's like walking through history. It's also pretty practical, in that it links the 4,5,6,S subway lines with MetroNorth. There's also an Apple Store there and a steakhouse. Loads of TV shows and movies have filmed here. Oh man, and the food court is sensational.

This place is just awesome. It's iconic and it's still functioning, which is a rarity. Shame the light doesn't stream in the windows like it does in the old photos, but there's still some secrets. Find one of the arched sections near the restaurants under the station and whisper into the corner: your friends will be able to hear it on the other side. It's pretty cool.
