“a decaying piece of history”
This place is on private property. Listing for informational purposes only. Please do not visit without express permission from the land owner. Built in 1837 and in operation until its closure in 1970, the old Essex County Jail has since been repopulated by drug addicts and the homeless who live scattered about its decaying and decrepit cell blocks. Oddly enough, the jail is listed on the state's historic register which has prevented the many attempts at demolishing it and transforming the property into something more useful.
It's not torn down, I went today. There's a ton of fire damage and loads of decay, with many people living there. Cool to see but if you don't like sketchy interactions, asbestos everywhere, and collapsed floors, it ain't for you
this place was demolished in 2012
