“quality fruit. artisan wines”
We believe that the art of winemaking starts with quality fruit. Planted in 1988, our grapes come from some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Oregon and we take every step to ensure the quality of that fruit from year to year. No one knows our fruit better than our Vineyard Manager, Jeremy Saville..The Willamette Valley in Oregon is fortunate to have a climate perfectly suited to the growing of Pinot Noir grapes. And while no other wine has as many critics as Pinot Noir, our mission is to make the best Pinot we can. We do our best to pay proper respect to the natural origins of our products, offer our wines at good values, educate our customers and ourselves, and not fall into the trap of taking things too seriously.A good friend always responded to comments about differences in food and wine by saying, "That's why they make chocolate and vanilla." The world of wine is about what you and your palate like; what your preferences are. We hope you will have the opportunity to try our wines ... and find a flavor you like.
Bishop Creek Farms is about 80 acres total. However, only 12 acres are planted to grapes, while the rest function as pasture and wildlife habitat. Within these 12 acres, there are 7 distinctive microsites, each with their own soil and aspect. 14 separate planting blocks have been tailored to take advantage of each microsite. Bishop Creek is in the Yamhill-Carlton District American Viticultural Area and wines from this area feature dark color and concentrated color tones. Bishop Creek is on the Willakenzie soil series and formed in the Eocene era, these soils are derived from marine sediments and ocean floor volcanic basalt. The sedimentary soils of the Yamhill-Carlton District viticultural area are millions of years older than the soils in the surrounding areas. We grow 3 varieties of grapes at Bishop Creek, Pinot noir, Pinot gris, and a small amount of Pinot blanc. From the standpoint of its layout, the Bishop Creek vineyard is a little quirky. But the fruit it grows is something really special. Bishop Creek has its own unique signature – it’s dark in color and has healthy tannins, but it’s never “monolithic.” The best wines from the vineyard have layers of flavor, with darker fruit tones and spice elements often complementing each other. Urban Wineworks, our tasting room in NW Portland, also offers fun classes, including blending classes.
