“World's largest free-swinging bell”
The World Peace Bell™ is the world’s largest swinging bell. It weighs 66,000 lbs., is 12 feet in diameter and 12 feet high. Its clapper alone weighs an amazing 6,878 pounds. The yoke in which it swings weighs an additional 26,000 pounds. This magnificent bell rings with a powerful, awe-inspiring, deep resonant tone that is truly a majestic symbol of freedom and peace.
It's pretty inconspicuous. There's a White Castle right around the corner, and I've probably driven by it many times on my way there. I'd walk here to see it while in Newport for something else (Newport Aquarium, perhaps), rather than make a visit in town JUST for this. Unless you're into bells and that sort of thing.
Its neat that this is so close to Cincinnati, but it is really just an accident of geography. When this thing rings it is LOUD and can be heard for miles around.
We stopped for a quick break and it was a nice little surprise. The bell was much larger than I was expecting. Stop below the bell and read the wording on the pavement. There's also a beautiful 9/11 memorial with a piece of metal from one of the towers. A great pit stop!
Oh the memories and history of this bell! This bell was meant to sit at the base of a very tall tower full of shops, businesses, restaurants and many attractions. Unfortunately, the community and structural support wasn't there. The bell was made to be an icon, as the world's largest free swinging bell. It was cast in France and shipped over and up the Mississippi and Ohio River. It rang in the new millennium, which was super appropriate as it was suppose to be the base of the "Millennium Monument". It is a site to see and has a lot great intent. Some day they will hopefully build the area as originally intended.
You really can just happen onto this attraction. Not much hoopla about it and worth a stroll by though it's not an attraction in and of itself that I'd make an afternoon out of.
Fun little stop! You can go inside the building and take the elevator up to see the bell up close. Good spot to stretch your legs and get some grub. Lots of food, hotels and shops around.
