Historic Treasure

Our Take

The Breakers, the Vanderbilts “summer cottage,” is the most famous of the Gilded Age Newport Mansions for good reason. It’s breathtaking in scope and scale and it’s hard to imagine anyone actually living here. The design of this grand home was inspired by European palaces and every room is more lavish than the last. Come around Christmas when the interiors are draped in red, gold, and evergreen.

“the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages"”

The Breakers is a Vanderbilt mansion located on Ochre Point Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island, United States on the Atlantic Ocean. It is a National Historic Landmark, a contributing property to the Bellevue Avenue Historic District, and is owned and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America.  Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) established the family fortune in steamships and later in the New York Central Railroad, which was a pivotal development in the industrial growth of the nation during the late 19th century.

Opulent elegance to the max. Very much enjoyed every room. Be sure to ask about the construction....done in 4 years as much of it came preassembled from different parts of Europe! Still unfathomable. The life and times of the people who lived there is equally as interesting. The deal on the mansions - get the 5 mansion pass. They are good forever and a real deal. We have made 3 trips, with no additional entrance fees - take in just one or two mansions at a time (about all one can absorb!).

Very beautiful house right along the cliff walk. But not sure if it was worth the $25 per adult. They do a self guided audio tour. My kids enjoyed it.

Amazing history and beautifully detailed mansion. Must see day trip, and give yourself time for the cliff walk after your tour

Awesome place. Closed at 5pm so I'll have to come back again to tour the inside.
