Lake Merritt is a large tidal lagoon that lies just east of downtown Oakland, California. It is surrounded by parkland and city neighborhoods. A popular 3.1 mile (5 km) walking and jogging path runs along its perimeter. It is historically significant as the United States' first official wildlife refuge, designated in 1870.
The lake was recently converted back to being a tidal estuary, and the wildlife is even better than before, an odd oasis in the middle of a gritty city.
Gorgeous views and very popular amongst locals
Enjoyed an evening stroll here. Most of it is paved, a small section of it is broken down to gravel almost. Would be a nice bike ride for a family with kids, especially with numerous child oriented establishments along the waterfront. Raccoons rats and homeless present at night, they're generally friendly if left alone.
