“17 miles long of gorgeous beach”

Hike to the spiral staircase for the most epic sunset of your life.

The beach offers many attractions such as camping, hiking, swimming, surfing, fishing, and is home to the famous Pismo clam. It is a popular place to bird watch and is the largest over-wintering colony of monarch butterflies in the U.S.

The name Pismo comes from the Chumash language word for tar, Pismu' , which was gathered from tar springs in Price Canyon near Pismo Beach. The tar was a valuable product which the Chumash Indians used to caulk their seagoing canoes, called tomol, that traveled along the coast and out to the Channel Islands.

The Pismo clam was named for the long, wide beach where so many were once found. Once so abundant they were harvested with plows on the beach, giving the city the name "Clam Capital of the World," the Pismo clam is now greatly diminished.

The southern end of Pismo Beach runs alongside sand dunes, which are followed by eucalyptus trees which attract thousands of migrating monarch butterflies every November through February.

The city has received a substantial number of mentions in popular culture, including the films The Big Lebowski and Clueless and the animated series Futurama, Robot Chicken, and The Critic.

This beach gets its name from the original access which has since been “disconnected”. It is located below the Ventana Grill in Pismo Beach. There is an old spiral staircase that used to provide access from the restaurant to the beach, but it has been condemned and is no longer connected to the bluff above. Without the ramp to the old stairs there is no way to get down to the beach. The beach is small anyway and gone at high tide, but it used to provide access to sea caves in the area that were reachable at low tides. This is still a great place to stop and look over the edge. The dilapidated staircase and the shoreline here are quite photogenic

As of 2017 stairs are no longer there. I believe there is plans to restore them and give beach access.

The spiral staircase has been "temporarily" dismantled. You can read more about it here: http://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/article43694826.html
