“this statue is your statue!”
The Woody Guthrie Coalition commissioned a local Creek Indian sculptor to cast a full-body bronze statue of Guthrie and his guitar, complete with the guitar's well-known inscription: "This machine kills fascists". The statue, sculpted by artist Dan Brook, stands along Okemah's main street - named Broadway - in the heart of downtown Okemah. Woody Guthrie wrote the song "This Land is your Land".
It's located in a small park, in a small OK town. If you've got time on your side and you're passing through (Leonard Cohen reference), then by all means stop by to see it. It's about 2 miles fr
I wouldn’t recommend coming here unless your a die hard fan.
We we disappointed that there was no music or anything to see or do. Yes it was a Sunday, but at least make it that I would like to come back.
The grass needs mowing and the stores around it need a lot of TLC.
You need to stretch your legs? Go to a rest stop or just keep driving.
Sweet short stop to check out the statue, not what I was expecting but a fun little leg stretching spot.
Woody Guthrie seems to be all that Okemah, OK seems to have going for it, anymore. The tiny park is easy to find, and the parking is great, so this is prime visitin' for those interested in Americana.
Fun side trip to check out the statue.
A nice statue in a small cute park surrounded by his song titles.
