“a highly respected Mecca for Italian Cuisine”
Nestled in the southwest corner of Lackawanna County, with a population of nearly 9,000, is the amazing town of Old Forge, PA. The community, being a majority of Italian immigrants, underwent a transformation to meet the challenge of the post WWII economic downturn in the coal industry and the transfer of the garment industry to other locations around the World. During the difficult period of the coal mining days; the hard working miners of this tiny town would climb out of the earth at night and go to the local taverns for some down time. It was there; that the wife’s and daughter’s of these men would make their homemade dough on “rectangular baking pans” and top it with fresh homegrown tomatoes and spice from their gardens. This, being the original concept of Old Forge Pizza. After many years of dedicated effort, the town has been very successful in transitioning into a highly respected Mecca for Italian Cuisine and has attained the distinction of being regarded as “The Pizza Capital of the World” Over the years, a tradition as sacred as High School Football on Friday nights has resulted in an overwhelming influx of Valley residents to partake in the post game ritual of, “Lets go to Old Forge for Pizza.”
