“protecting miles and shore line”

For thousands of marine species, these coastal waters are a safe haven. The marine environment and offshore islands are protected by three national wildlife refuges and Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. The refuges manage the islands visible above high tide waters for 135 miles along the coast. Large nesting colonies ofbirds like common murres and tufted puffins need these rocky outposts. Campgrounds at Kalaloch and South Beach are the only places to camp on the southern coast of Olympic National Park. Kalaloch is open year-round, and has 175 campsites, four of which are wheelchair accessible. Make sure to reserve a site as early on in the year as possible, as they fill up quickly and most are booked throughout the summer. South Beach, just south of Kalaloch, has about 50 campsites and is open Memorial Day - late September.

I really loved it here. I wish that I could have made it to Ruby beach (or Kalaloch beach for that matter) at sunset because it's pretty hazy during the day. If you want to take nice pictures, I think sunset would be best.

Ruby beach is one of my favorite places on earth. So beautiful, calm, and surreal. We live In south Florida and will drive all the way to ruby beach to have an hour on the coast before sunset. It's worth stopping if you'll be in the Olympic area. Don't forget to bring a jacket if you're not from the area as it gets very chilly even in august!

Has to be one of the best beaches in Washington State, though it does get crowded here.
