“Nature in Overland Park, KS”

The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is one of the best kept secrets in metropolitan Kansas City. It is located in Johnson County at the far south edge of the metro area, on 179th Street, 1/2 mile west of US-69. Still under development, large portions of the 300 acre park are being dedicated to the preservation and restoration of natural ecosystems. The traditional gardens began in 1996 with The Erickson Water Garden. Additional major gardens have been opened nearly every year. There are now 10 gardens and 8 arboretum ecosystems with 5 miles of trails. Some are paved and wheel chair friendly. One of the newest gardens at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is the lovely Monet garden inspired by the gardens in Giverny. 14 sculptures are set throughout the gardens which blend willow trees, perennials and annuals around ponds.

If you are looking for an escape from your everyday routine to enjoy the natural world’s beauty, check out Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Garden. It was founded to ensure the city is at the forefront of environmental and ecological issues.

With 300 acres of land, the garden has an endless list of captivating outdoor adventures. They include a walk in the woods, hiking trails, beautiful trees and flowers, sounds from different varieties of birds, and sculptures.

The garden also has gorgeous themed gardens, including the Erickson Water Garden, Train Garden, Monet Garden, and Children’s Discovery Garden.

In addition to the garden, there’s also a 5-mile trail where you can go for walks to check out the beautiful display of foliage. While on your visit, you can enjoy a snack from the Garden Cafe.

We think a visit here is one of the best things to do in Overland Park!

I was pleasantly surprised by the scale of this garden! It sprawls across rolling terrain and nothing is crowded or too far apart. The integration of sculpture is done very well, the map is informative, and the placement of rest facilities and benches was perfect. The model train area is amazing; I hope they can keep their docents to maintain that ambitious project! Very well suited for children and those of us without them. The water elements were wonderful to gaze upon, the use of lettuces, cabbage, and rhubarb for border plants inventive, and the admission ($3) hard to beat! Worth the short trip from KC to wander for an hour or two!
