“for prime elk-viewing trails”

Seeing and hearing elk in person is an awe-inspiring experience – the high point of any visit to Pennsylvania Elk Country. With that experience in mind, we've designed the Elk Country Visitor Center as a place where visitors have an opportunity to see and experience these majestic animals year round in their natural habitat. The Visitor Center features three observation trails with viewing areas and interpretive wayside displays.  All trails are wheelchair accessible and lead to viewing areas where you can see the elk, but they cannot see you.  Visitors can also experience and learn about other native plants and animals, area history, and the surrounding ecosystem. We ask that you observe Visitor Guidelines on trails and elsewhere in the Visitor Center.  Remember to stay on the designated trails and paths at all times for your safety and the safety of the elk.  No pets or smoking are permitted in the Center or on trails or viewing areas.  Please use trash receptacles or take trash with you.  Trails and viewing areas are for foot traffic only.

A very nice building and inside displays. We got there mid-day and the Elk were not out anywhere near the trails.

We got there at 9:30 and left at 11. The earlier in the day you get there, the better. If it is too hot or sunny, you probably won't see much.

If you have a chance to stop by, I would highly recommend it! The day we stopped by, it was cloudy and there was a little rain. It was perfect weather for the elk to come out into the fields! Take binoculars and a zoom lense for your camera if you have one (if not, phones work just fine). We went to the Visitors Center and looked around. There is some good information about the elk and there is a short video they show every 30 minutes. It's about $5 per person but it's worth it. Plus the money goes to the conservation of the herd. They have view screens in the Center showing camera looking towards the fields and there is a walk you could do arou d the them. We left there and drove down Winslow Road. We saw about 30 elk in the field across from the Elk View Diner. They were pretty far off though. It was a great place to get pictures. We drove through the park for a while and down one dirt road (and it was actually dirt so if there was a lot of rain, smaller cars might not make it. We had a minivan that was fine though). We ended up seeing one loan elk standing on the side of the road which was even better. Even if you don't see any elk, the park is very pretty and just driving around was lots of fun.
