“built in 1829 and is now open to visitors”
The Andrew Johnston House was built in 1829 and is now open to visitors as a historic house museum. A lovely, well-preserved Federal-style home with with fine details and proportions is an outstanding example of the period. The house is constructed of brick made on the property. The walls are twenty-two inches thick at the base and the log floor joists are twelve inches in diameter.Handsome mantels surround the fireplaces. High ceilings, sunny rooms, a center hall and staircase, wide pine floors, ornate architraves and hand-painted stencil borders in the parlor and an upper bedroom denote the elegance of Andrew Johnston's "country home estate."In 1993, the Andrew Johnston House was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
