“where hogs and monkeys live together!”
The Peoria Zoo (formerly Glen Oak Zoo) is a zoo located in Peoria, Illinois, in the United States. The zoo is owned and operated by the Peoria Park District and is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Years Day. The Africa exhibit opened in 2009 after more than a decade of planning and two and a half years of construction. In this exhibit the visitors walk around the main area on a boardwalk, and can see across the entire expanse of the enclosure. The main area is divided into two sections, the northern section containing giraffes and gazelles, and the southern section being home to zebras and rhinos. Lions have their own enclosure, as do the mandrills. Red River hogs and colobus monkeys share a home, and the African crested porcupines and Aldabra giant tortoise also live together. The Peoria Zoo has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1976. Peoria Zoo's mission is to Create connections that inspire an appreciation for the natural world.
Great little zoo! African exhibit is the best! You can tell the animals are well cared for! Lots to see!!!
It was nice to see the animals up-close and in a great view. I had great pictures with the lion because there was only a glass between me and the lion. The Africa Exhibit is the best part of the zoo. It was also nice to see that the animals are well taken care of.
The Peoria Zoo is a fun place for the whole family! ! This zoo is adjacent to the Luthy Botanical Garden and Glen Oak Park, and the operations are under the Peoria Park District. Since 1981, the zoo has been certified by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums and is home to 230 animals representing over 100 different species.
Families and visitors can enjoy six unique exhibits, including a Tropics Building, Conservation Center, and Asian Trail. The resident animals include boa constrictors, rhinos, tigers, tortoises, emus, and wallabies. There’s also plenty of opportunity for interactions between animals and visitors, with various camps, summer programs, and classes for children and adults.
