“Originally opened in 1927”

The Bagdad Theater is a movie theater in the Hawthorne District of Portland, Oregon, United States. It originally opened in 1927 and was the site of the premiere gala of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1975, and of My Own Private Idaho in 1991. The theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Bagdad Theatre 1989. It is currently owned by the McMenamins brewpub chain. This marvelous relic of Hollywood's Golden Age is a movie palace full of wonder and surprises. For nearly four generations now, the Bagdad's Mediterranean/neon persona and daily films have made it an icon of Portland's vibrant Hawthorne District. The interior is an attraction in and of itself, with barreled arches, ornate wrought-iron fixtures, brilliant mosaics and painted Mediterranean designs and characters. Kick back in the theater for enjoy a slice of pizza and a handcrafted ale during the show, or come early and enjoy dinner in the casual pub that fronts the theater — but beware,  outdoor tables in the summertime may be hard to come by! It's some of the best people-watching seats in the whole city. The Bagdad is said to be the favorite haunt for a man who once hanged himself backstage and another haunt whose residence is said to be the women’s powder room.

Southeast Portland's marvelous relic of Hollywood's Golden Age is a stunning movie palace full of wonder and surprises. For nearly four generations now, the Bagdad's Mediterranean and neon persona and daily offerings of celluloid adventures have made it an icon of Portland's vibrant Hawthorne District. A movie hall of the best sort, the Bagdad's interior is an attraction unto itself with barreled arches, ornate, wrought iron fixtures, brilliant-colored mosaic work, and painted and stenciled Mediterranean designs and mythical characters. Kick back in the theater and enjoy a slice of pizza and a handcrafted ale during the show, or come early and enjoy dinner in the casual pub that fronts the theater.

What can I say, I like a lot of things about this site. First is the architecture, it is gorgeous. Second is the fact you can watch a movie and have a few beers and it is all very affordable!

Part of McMenamins. Where else can you have not only your food, but delicious adult drinks delivered right to your spacious seats while watching a movie in an old historic renovated building?! They brew their own, try the black cherry hard cider!
