“a portland soccer oasis”
The scene: Making up for its lack of soccer skills by transforming what looks like a strip-mall storefront into Portland's tropical oasis -- indoor river and all -- Hale Pele's extensive cocktail menu pays tribute to classic Tiki places with drinks from Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic's, and other godfathers of drink umbrellas. And lest you forget you're in Portland, there are simulated rainstorms. What you're drinking: Sailor's Grog, a Hale Pele original concoction of over-proof rum, ginger beer, spices, and syrup.
Thrillist - Best Tiki Bars in America
I really liked this place. I am an avid fan of tiki bars and this one is at the top of it's game. The glowing blowfish lighting add to the ambiance, as does the small pond you walk across upon entering. The highlight for me is that often you will see flaming drinks which are part of the fun, but here every once in a awhile, the actual walls smoke up (steam, but to emulate smoke) It makes the entire bar excited and it is a spectacle. They also serve the drinks that create sparks. The bartenders know how to create their cocktails and use fresh fruits, not the gross syrups. The food was decent, typical pork and pineapple fare. Nothing amazing, but great bar food. The place is small, so it gets crowded easily. Show up earlier rather than later or there just won't be space, however the smaller space makes it a more intimate vibe and I liked it. All in all, great place, check it out!
