“Flavors Upon Flavors!”
In 1983, when Northwest 23rd Avenue and the surrounding neighborhood was little more than a hodgepodge of thrift stores, laundromats and run-down Victorians, the second Papa Haydn location opened its doors on the corner of 23rd and Irving. What a difference 29 years makes! Northwest Portland, and 23rd Avenue in particular, is now a bustling, thriving, and vital mix of retail, residential, and restaurants. A mecca for shopping, eating, and people-watching! What hasn't changed, however, is the popularity of this family-owned destination restaurant, as popular with tourists as with locals. The focus remains, as always, on the highest quality foods, beverages, and service.
Before eating at Papa Haydn I can honestly say that I didn't understand foodies. Don't get me wrong - I like good food, I just didn't understand the foodie culture. All of this changed with a trip to Pap Haydn - I made my typical request of our waitress asking what she felt was their best item on the menu, to which she answered the octopus. Intrigued I took the bait (so to speak) and along with a bacon salad, I can say the meal changed my world. Damn you foodies and Papa Haydn - I'll never see food the same. It was incredible. I'd give it a 10 if I could.
I don't know if the food is any good but my husband and I love their cakes. It is a perfect to go on a date and share something sweet!
While open for lunch and dinner, Papa Haydn is best known for its decadent desserts. In the heart of people-watching territory. Outside seating on the street, weather permitting.
