“Meet the animal mayor!”
With a dog as the officially elected mayor, Rabbit Hash has made national news more than once for its funkiness. Composed of a general store, a museum, and a couple other little buildings, Rabbit Hash has charm and old-timer history in spades. In a world that seems to be changing constantly, the Rabbit Hash General Store is a heaping slice of Americana from another era. A working general store since 1831, the Rabbit Hash General Store is the heart of historic Rabbit Hash, a quaint little Northern Kentucky river-town whose fortunes literally have risen and fallen with the waters of the Ohio River. Scenically located along the river w/live music most weekends, Rabbit Hash is the perfect place for a little Sunday cruise. The town's name, "Rabbit Hash" is said to have originated during the flood of 1847 when the abundant local rabbit population was driven to higher ground and became a food staple in a special stew called "hash." Little documented history of Rabbit Hash actually survives, primarily because devastating Ohio River floods in 1884, 1913 and 1937 deluged the little town and ruined many records. The Rabbit Hash General Store was completely submerged during the 1937 flood that crested at an unheard of 79.9 feet. There is still mud in the store's attic crawl space from the historic 1937 flood, and the only reason it has survived the river's often angry waters is that it is anchored securely to the ground by a series of iron rods which run through the entire structure. Much of the rest of Rabbit Hash was not so fortunate during the historic flood. Several residences, outbuildings, the creamery, a tobacco warehouse and the blacksmith shop were washed away in 1937. *While playing fetch with the mayor is encouraged, please don't feed her people food.*
Really cool old town with a great view of the river. If you're lucky, Lucy the mayor will be in town. The only town in Kentucky that has a dog for a mayor.
MUST SEE when in the area - VERY CUTE area - at the end of a long two lane country road - only a few buildings here but everything is cute - nice waterfront views from a high bluff.
If you're in the area you definitely have to go! The general store definitely seems like it's stuck in the past. They sell plenty of cool, over-priced little trinkets but it's just a fun, quirky town (the town mayor is a dog) that is a good stop on a trip through. Combine the town of Rabbit Hash with some hiking in Big Bone Lick State Park and you've got a great day-trip!
LOVED IT!! Such a cute town and a beautiful view of the river. Even got to meet the friendly and fluffy town mayor. If she is there while your visiting be sure to play fetch with her she loves it! Definitely will be going back!!
Rabbit Hash is a collection of little shops and such right on the river. Get a beer in the general store and then enjoy it at a picnic table by the river: it's divine. A nice biker lady introduced me to the current mayor, Brynn the pit bull, who was magnificent. So sweet. She didn't bark once, just laid around and sniffed stuff, typical mayoral duties. Windy, cool drive in must be great on a bike because there were lots of motorcycles. Park on the street leading down into town if there's no parking in the gravel.
Well it was really cute but just saw that the general store has burned down. So sad!! Hope they will rebuild.
I grew up around Rabbit Hash, and I have always loved it! It has great people and great scenery. There are a few other little shops around the store that are usually open to the public, and the Ohio River is right infront of you!
The voting process is actually a lot of fun. Everyone in town brings their animals, creates fliers and such to get your vote. It's a $1 per vote, but you can vote however many times, and however many animals! We once even had a pig as mayor!
The store itself is small but it still has bottled soda, tobacco, and a few other little things (hence the name general store). I would highly recommend taking a trip out to Rabbit Hash!
Maybe it's because I grew up around Rabbit Hash, but I generally find this little place unappealing. It's a one-road town (literally) that's main claim to fame is a dog was elected mayor (among other animals). The association I have with Rabbit Hash is motorcycles, as it seems it never fails that any time I would head towards or be around Rabbit Hash, you'd pass tons of motorcycles enjoying the country roads.
