“Traditional Southern Cooking in Richmond, VA”
The Roosevelt is a neighborhood restaurant in Church Hill, Richmond, Virginia's oldest neighborhood. Our food is an untraditional celebration of the food of the South, served alongside an all-Virginia wine list, a hearty roster of regional beers, and a selection of cocktails that'll knock your socks off. The Roosevelt opened in Richmond, Virginia, in July 2011, to public and critical acclaim. The Roosevelt was named 2012 Restaurant of the Year by Style Magazine, Best New Restaurant in the Region by Richmond Magazine and awarded an Elby as the city's Best New Restaurant. James Beard nominee Lee Gregory, chef and co-owner, worked under chef Dale Reitzer at Acacia in Richmond, Virginia, for five years before moving to Six Burner (Richmond), Mockingbird in Staunton, and Blue Light Grill in Charlottesville. He returned to RVA in 2011 to open The Roosevelt. In addition to The Roosevelt, Kendra Feather owns 2 other restaurants and a bakery in Richmond, Virginia. Feather opened Ipanema Cafe in 1998. Garnett's Cafe followed in 2009, and WPA Bakery in November 2012. The magnificently bearded Thomas "T" Leggett is the man behind The Roosevelt's cocktails, including the signature Seersucker. Stop by and say hi.
I do not even know where to start when it comes to The Roosevelt. Honestly, this has been hands down one of the most memorable meals that I have ever had and have eaten all over the world. First I should say that we fought eating here because we had just eaten our way through the South and were trying to wean off of fried foods. The description of the restaurant says "Southern" so we thought, oh well-one more time for old times sake. Although this may be Southern inspired, the cuisine at The Roosevelt is very much fine dining, which you would not tell with the lovely casual atmosphere that the owner and the staff keep. You walk into this wonderful cozy restaurant and its just so welcoming and so charming. You have no idea that the menu is going to be so well curated. I ordered the Monkfish over mashed potatoes and my friend ordered the catfish over succotash. All was prepared very clean, yet savory and the presentation was impeccable. For dessert we ordered off menu and took their buttermilk pie. I really wanted to try their foie gras poundcake that had sold out and they very kindly provided me with a small piece that was left over to make my dreams come true. On top of this, the cocktails were great and at the end of the night they gave us a list of recommendations of great places to go after dinner and called us a car service who took us to a few cool bars before we settled into one for the night. Overall, great food and great service. LOVE LOVE LOVE this place and would travel to Richmond again just to try their Coca Cola cake which is only served in the winter.
