“14,000 acres of mountain beauty!”
Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait. Sunlight and shadows dance across a broad tapestry of stone. White-tailed deer emerge from the security of the forest to graze on meadow grasses at the mountain's base. The scenery is only one attraction of the park. Test your fly-fishing techniques in more than 20 miles of designated trout waters. Or, with more than 16 miles of trails, take a hike in the park. Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1975, Stone Mountain is bounded on the north by the Blue Ridge Parkway and on the west by the Thurmond Chatham Game Lands. More than 14,200 acres of mountain beauty offer opportunities for outdoor activities of all kinds.

This place is stunning! We hiked 7.7 miles. It was worth every step. Gorgeous waterfall and amazing view. One tip: hike it counter clockwise.
Fabulous. Not so far to walk to top of falls. If you bear right and head down the wooden stairs you can reach base of falls which are great. The trail continues but we returned making it a doable hour from car park and stretch our legs. Recommend this.
Really nice campground. Clean shower house. Beautiful mountain. Great trail and view!
Absolutely gorgeous! Pretty little waterfall, well marked trails, and the most breathtaking views. The historic valley settlement was also an added bonus we didn't know about when going! Highly recommend if you like nature, hiking or history.
We camped at Stone Mountain State Park in our 26 foot motorhome. The sites were spacious and a rushing creek lulled us to sleep at night. Though we were at there at the height of the camping season, the facilities were kept very clean. The campground hosts and park personnel were very friendly and gave us helpful hiking advice. We can't wait to go back.

Water and electric at each RV site. Restrooms are clean. Roads and sites are paved. We camp here. You can not go wrong camping here. For cell phone and supplies, there is a small store before you get to Stone Mountain on the right side.

We liked this park, the sites were large, paved, and at a good distance from each other. Sites have water and electricity, but NO SEWER! Next to the pad is a large gravel pad where one can set up a canopy, another tent, chairs, tables, bar-b-cue, etc. The bathhouse is nice and clean, but only one shower out of four worked properly. There is very limited, or non-existent phone service. NO WI-FI, for good service and internet access you will need to drive to the closest store which is 28 miles away in Elkin. The park gate closes at 10pm, so no one in or out. The best part of the park was the trails, specially to the summit of Stone Mountain with several falls. There is also opportunities for fly fishing in the streams, and equestrian trails too. The one downside was the time of year we camped, extremely BUGGY, with those persistent "Marmorated Stink Bugs" trying to enter the RV through every and any hole they can find. I suggest staying away from September- November, but then you will miss the beautiful changes in the leaves! It balances out, I guess!

First, regarding cost-NC gives a Senior discount ($6/night) to ALL seniors regardless of domicile. I figured our price with the $15 service fee from Reserve America included.
Secondly, the review that talks about lack of access after 10pm and no WiFI unless in Elkins is wrong. There is NO reception within the campground but 1/2 mile up the hill (an easy walk) at the Visitor Center there is WiFi for free and if there is no-one using the conference room the staff will let you. The WiFi (once you get the password) also works in the parking lot at the VC. The Main gates close at 8 or 10 pm-depending on the time of year-BUT the night access road is open from closing to morning and that information is given when you check in.
As for the campground:
Pros-nice, well spaced and generally level sites-a large gravel area with fire ring, picnic table and pole hook the creek runs through the center so many sites back up to it-Site 55 looks to be the best site
Gorgeous hiking within the park-all levels but Stone Mountain is a must- Stone Mountain Falls are wonderful but be prepared for 200+ stairs and wear waterproof boots if planning to hike to either of the lower falls
Helpful and friendly staff at both the contact station and Visitor Center
Easy access (but if your GPS directs you to Alleghany Spur Rd do not take it-it is right around the corner from the Frank Parkway which leads right to the park.)
Seems to be quiet on weekdays but busy on weekends.
Quiet and beautiful
Close to the Blue Ridge Parkway
Cons-with no cell reception you do need to go up to the Visitor Center
The showers are terrible-push button, spray all over, not worth it unless you don't have a rig with one

This park was a welcomed oasis nestled in a valley below the hills and mountains. Actual “Stone Mountain” is not visible from the campground but the views are still lovely. Large park, sites spread out enough, plenty to choose from depending on your style. We backed up in one of the 70’s along the creek and loved the view out of our big back window! Bathroom nice enough, we use our rig. Staff was friendly, sites clean and campground quiet even though it was about half full of campers. Saw deer each night throughout the campground!
We hiked the summit and loop trail and at the recommendation of the camp host we took the the loop backwards and absolutely LOVED it! We went early and avoided the crowds on a Saturday morning. 7 miles and awesome views! Highly recommend!
