“heavily wooded park”

Hoeft State Park is a heavily wooded park with a mile of sandy, Lake Huron shoreline. A paved non-motorized trail connects the park to Huron Sunrise Trail which stretches to Rogers City riding along the beach next to Lake Huron and ends at the world's largest open pit limestone mine.

We have camped quite a bit in Michigan over the years, but never on the Lake Huron side. Wow, what a nice park this is. Large campsites, not a ton of privacy but that didn't seem to bother anybody (not us at all). Make sure you have a camping mat/rug, because the sites are dirt (just a minor negative IMHO). There's a asphalt bike trail that leads into Rogers City one direction, and the 40 Mile Point light house the other direction. The beach is about a 200 foot walk from the eastern-most camp row, and is very clean; water chilly but awesome. Rogers City has a great butcher shop and a large grocery store. Golf courses nearby. Take about a half hour drive west on M-68 to Ocqueoc Falls, there's a nice swimming hole there.

Stayed 6/29/19. Made reservations same day thru reservation.gov app. Super easy! This is a beautiful park but oh so busy! Ohmygosh. There’s no privacy. Shade was nice and electrical was included. Free dump and fresh water at the exit. Great park and beach views! Cute little park shop with candy and shirts and hats. Sadly we were kept up through the night and early morning with unhappy young kids and barking dogs around us. We’re an off the beaten path kinda fam so we’ll come back during less crowded season.

Date of Visit = May 2021

Our original site #35 was not accessible for our rig due to the trees and the angle of access, but the hosts were very accommodating and gave us a list of other available sites. We were allowed to drive around and choose, and we ended up with an "eyebrow" site which was the largest in the park, though only 30A. Water was not turned on yet for the season, so there was no fill, dump, restrooms, or showers. Our stay wasn't long, so that wasn't a problem, but it would've prohibited a much longer stay and made the price high for the service available.

There are many nice walking trails in the park, beach access over the dunes (midge flies were out in full force), and a paved walk/bike trail (Huron-Sunrise Trail) that leads to 40-mile Lighthouse to the north and Rogers City to the south. We biked to the lighthouse, which was fabulous.

Park was not busy while we were there (time of year, no water) but it reportedly gets quite busy during the summer months. We got some OATV reception, but Verizon was very spotty.

This is our second state park in Michigan and much like the last one, VERY crowded with very little privacy.

Sites are very funky and situated so you are basically surrounded by other people in every direction.

Sites are not level with some worse than others. Ours was easy enough to remedy with two leveling blocks.

The park itself is nice with good hiking trails that are awesome for escaping the crowds at the campground. The beach is amazing and the lake is stunning.

Boundaries appear to be a forgotten characteristic of many of our neighbors for some reason. The positioning of the sites is weird but it is possible to use the road to get from point A to point B instead of walking through other people’s campsites. We have stayed in at least 40 different campgrounds and have never seen this.

Bathroom and showers are clean and newer. Hot water and awesome water pressure.

Cell service is spotty but works outside for the most part.
