“connecting the past, present and future”
The Witte Museum promotes lifelong learning through innovative exhibitions, programs, and collections in natural history, science and South Texas heritage. The Witte Museum will be the confluence of the community, culture, and river. It will be an exemplary center where visitors engage in relevant and thought-provoking experiences. Exhibitions, programs, and collections will connect the past, the present, and future through a dynamic learning environment.
The Witte Museum is San Antonio's oldest and (in my opinion) best museum. It has underground a great deal of change and expansion in the past five years in order to keep up with the times and technology. The South Texas Heritage Center combines innovative technology with hands-on experiences to tell the story of San Antonio. The newly constructed Mays Center will now feature large traveling exhibits, putting the Witte on par with some of the best museums in the state if not the country. The Witte also has an amazing collection of dinosaur fossils from the area. The grounds are also spectacular in of themselves. Historical homes and buildings have been relocated to the manicured grounds. The property also comes up to the San Antonio River. It is absolutely beautiful and a must visit for any out-of-towners.
Right now there is an exhibit called "grossology" where you can crawl up inside a model of a human nose.
Don't miss the spaces out behind the museum towards the river--the treehouse is this awesome science-y discovery area for kids, but it's worth visiting with or without them. By far the best part of the museum.
