“Street Foods of Mexico”

La Gloria is a place that was created to celebrate the rich and delicious street foods from interior Mexico. From tacos al pastor in Mexico City, tlayudas in Oaxaca, to coctéles de mariscos from Veracruz, Mexico's street foods are as unique and colorful as its traditions, people and culture. La Gloria means "the heavens", and our wish is that you experience heaven on earth through dining with us. Remember, "No hace falta morir para llegar a la Gloria." ("You don't have to die to go to heaven.") We believe we are changing the way diners taste, experience, and think about Mexican food. Innovative, deeply rooted in culinary traditions, and inspired by Chef Johnny's extensive travels throughout Mexico. La Gloria is situated on the grounds of the historic Pearl Brewery. The menu is filled with the heavenly flavors ordinarily found only among the street vendors, taquerías, and kitchens of interior Mexico. Devotion to authenticity goes beyond the menu and is reflected in every facet of La Gloria, from the stunning copper grill hand-crafted by Mexican artisans, to the unique angeles sopladores y voladores - flying and blowing angels that welcome diners and blow away evil spirits.

This may very well be my favorite restaurant in San Antonio. It's the first spot I take friends who are visiting town. It's unlike most Tex-Mex places around SA in that it's lighter (think Ceviche vs. just beans and rice), more legit (think Mole, a chocolate-y sauce for meat that you put in a taco), and just generally better (Tacos al pastor vs. bean and cheese). It's also a light-filled spot with outdoor seating overlooking a particularly well-landscaped portion of the River Walk (the northern end that ends up at the Pearl).

Try a Michelada (kind of like a bar-meets-a-particularly-spicy-bloody-mary). Not for the faint of heart, but I love it.

If you don't get a chance to make it to this awesome restaurant--FEAR NOT! They actually just opened a restaurant in the San Antonio airport!! And it's quality. Rarely do you get to eat good local food in an airport. In this regard, good for SAT. Breakfast tacos to-go, on the plane, yay!
