“the third oldest scientific institution west of the Mississippi”
The San Diego Natural History Museum was founded in 1874 as the San Diego Society of Natural History. The present location of the museum in San Diego's Balboa Park was dedicated on January 14, 1933. It is the third oldest scientific institution west of the Mississippi and the oldest in Southern California.
Older kills will probably have a better appreciation for this place, since it's less interactive and hands on than, say, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. That being said, as a grown-up, I think they've done a good job with the exhibits here and bring in some top notch rotating stuff. It is a little pricey for what it is, though.
