“The greatest zoo in America”

In 1916 Dr. Harry Wegeforth heard the roar of a lion left over from a World’s Fair in San Diego. At that moment, the prominent physician decided a zoo was needed in San Diego. Now world-famous, the San Diego Zoo is still innovating with groundbreaking new exhibits for more than 3,700 animals, while entertaining millions of visitors. From Australian koalas to Arctic polar bears, the San Diego Zoo celebrates more than 90 years of animal adventure. Open 365 days a year, the San Diego Zoo welcomes San Diego families as well as visitors from around the world.  The 100-acre (40-hectare) Zoo is home to over 3,700 rare and endangered animals representing more than 668 species and subspecies, and a prominent botanical collection with more than 700,000 exotic plants. It is located just north of downtown San Diego in Balboa Park. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is an expansive wildlife sanctuary that is home to more than 2,600 animals representing more than 340 species. Its renowned botanical collection represents 3,500 species and 1.5 million specimens. Over half of the Park’s 1,800 acres (730 hectares) have been set aside as protected native species habitat. It is located 35 miles (56 kilometers) north of downtown San Diego in the San Pasqual Valley near Escondido, California.

We stopped here a few years ago on a trip to comic con, and it really is a proper world class zoo. We were lost all day walking around, it was busy but everything was accessible, the cable cars were great, we saw the pandas, had a blast really!

I visited here with my girlfriend whose on a scooter. We spent all day going around this massive zoo. We had to get a shuttle a couple times due to the hills, but it was a blast. Alberts restaurant in the middle of it all was wonderful for a nice lunch.

In my opinion this is the best zoo in the universe. You can really see any animal you've ever dreamed of and the scenery is so green and wonderful. It will easily take you the entire day to see what this zoo has to offer.

I went here on a field trip in 5th grade and had somehow managed to lose my wallet before I had even stepped off the bus so that was pretty devastating and I also discovered on this trip that flamingos are actually not as pink as lawn ornaments depict them to be, so that was equally upsetting. However, I visited this zoo again a few years ago and it was great, I would highly recommend making a day out of it because there's so much to see and learn and I think everyone would enjoy spending time here.

Best zoo. If you are in town for a few days but the season pass and go to the safari park too, it will pay for itself. Lots of walking & hills. They do have the bus tours & sky lifts

This is an amazing zoo. It's all about the Pandas. I've posted a few pics. You have to time your wait in line with when they are active. You don't want to wait, only to see the distant back of a sleeping panda. Sometimes you can tell what state they are in by listening from outside to the run commentary coming from the volunteer inside.

Also not to miss is the Sky Ride. There are so few of these left. It's just one of those dumb zoo rides I've loved since I was a kid. Kind of like the train at the Cincinnati Zoo.

If you're in town for a convention, like comic-con, then you should hit up this zoo. It's one of the nicest zoos in the country. Impeccably maintained and very beautiful laid out. I will say it gets very crowded during tourist season.

Beautiful and lush! Be prepared to pay a stiff price. Lots of places to find shade. Polar bears & gorillas were great. Pandas were fun to see for their rarity and eating the bamboo. Spent 6 hours there including a relaxing lunch at Albert's. I saw about 65-70% but would have seen more with better mapping and trail signage!! Many people were as lost and confused as I was. And I'm a good map reader!!

There are no phone charging stations! After asking several staff & volunteers for ideas I just kept my eyes open and at the point my phone was almost dead I spied an option. Seek out the penguin indoor viewing area. The large center cement post has commercial covered outlets on at least 3 sides with benches.

Other things to note: Go in the morning to see the biggest gorilla with his troop of females. Afternoon is the smaller males. Panda's are visible at feeding time which is twice a day. Afternoon time was 3:30-4pm. Twice a day for abt 30-40 min. orangutans on the Fern Canyon Trail / Orangutan Trail hoot & holler like crazy! I heard them from 3:30-4 pm on FCT, couldn't see them though.

I've always wanted to go! Got to go and take my family. We had a blast! It is big and I got my steps in for sure but worth every step. Best zoo experience I've ever had. Everyone is super friendly and knowledgeable. My cousin lives in San Diego and she takes her kids almost weekly. So much to see and do. Can make a good day of it or spread it out. We had a friendly man greet us at the gate and give us tips on what to do in what order so we didn't waste time trying to figure out where we were. The bus tour is amazing. The sky-tram was fun. The 4d was awesome! I would go again!! Loved it!! If you like pics and memories I recommend the story package. They will take pictures of you and your family all over the park and you can download for free along with get prints. That was my souvenir and I couldn't be happier!! ❤️❤️❤️
