An always-too-crowded oyster bar with a row of nineteen wobbly stools and a menu on the wall that lists little more than shellfish, Swan Oyster Depot has been a beacon for seafood lovers since it opened in 1912. Oysters from the east and west coasts are served on the half-shell; The menu also includes whole lobsters, seafood salads made of shrimp or crab; and smoked trout or salmon, available with rye or French bread. Also, creamy Boston-style chowder.
Worth dealing with the line and the tourists. Bring cash. Try the sea urchin and Italian crudo.
There's a reason the lines outside never end: This classic seafood counter has some of the best, freshest seafood SF has to offer. There's no beating the classic seafood salads topped with Louie dressing ($15.25 to $25), and yes, you do want to try the fresh sea urchin (A.Q.), still moving when the shell hits your table.
