“a tiny piece of history!”
In 1967, the owners of The Grubstake I at 142 Mason Street (now the site of the Parc Fifty Five Hotel) established The Grubstake II in an old Key Line rail car. When business expanded, they added the present kitchen and dining room. Today, The Grubstake continues the tradition of serving cooked-to-order burgers and breakfasts—as well as full meals and house-made desserts—from 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. daily.
One of my favorite diners in San Francisco, but the Portuguese influence lends Grubstake its own unique twist as well.
Their breakfast special has always been my favorite. It has bacon, eggs, fries and toast. It's basically like home food but theirs is just bursting with flavors. I love the fact that even though most of these stuff are fried, they never get too oily or soggy. They are cooked and served very nicely. Their milkshakes are great, too. I've always been a fan of their chocolate milkshake. It's smooth and perfectly sweet. And for a change, you can try their Portuguese options, too. Their Bifanas, a type of Portuguese sandwich, are simply delightful!
