“Spreading the culture of Native American, Spanish, and Mexican people”

San Juan is a monument to California's multi-cultural history, embracing its Native American, Spanish, Mexican and European heritage. Originally built as a self sufficient community by Spanish Padres and Native Americans, the Mission was a center for agriculture, industry, education and religion. Mission San Juan Capistrano has been the home to many people over 230 years of history. Its history consists of memories and stories of its past inhabitants and present visitors. It is a place of historical, cultural, and religious significance, as well as a place of inspiration and education. See a snapshot of California’s history by touring our museum exhibits in both our museum rooms and throughout our 10-acre grounds of gardens, fountains and adobe preserved architecture. Most of our on-going events and exhibits are included in the price of admission. Visitors here may catch a glimpse of any of three ghosts: a Native American girl, a bellringer, and a Spanish soldier who is missing his head.

Didn't have time to stay long enough to visit the entire grounds but the tour was informative and the botanicals were great all over the area.

Nice little oasis off the freeway, a good introduction into Californian history. Audio guide pitched to the right level. Worth a visit.
