Over eight years ago,” says Nancy, “Inspired by a newspaper article [read article], I first smoked North Carolina-style barbecue pork on my Weber Ranch Kettle in my backyard. It was a day-long, hot, sooty, high-maintenance endeavor that had my eyes stinging from smoke and sweat; not a culinary pursuit for the faint of heart. Why would I bother doing it again? Because the results were transcendent; I was hooked. If you enjoy barbecue, one taste of North Carolina-style barbecue pulled pork may seduce you as it did me. Seven years later, the brothers Caragiulo, seasoned Sarasota restaurateurs (Caragiulos, Owen’s Fish Camp) and longtime friends of Nancy’s, partnered with her to open Nancy’s Bar-B-Q restaurant in downtown Sarasota’s historic Burns Square. They created a true barbecue joint in what was once a Sinclair Oil ἀlling station and garage, adding a smokehouse where a massive barbecue oven — fueled with oak — smokes pork, ribs, beef brisket, chicken, Texas Hot Link and Kielbasa-style sausage and fillet of salmon “low and slow” every day except Sunday.   Now Nancy’s devoted followers — and legions of new fans — enjoy her food for lunch and dinner at communal tables in the dining room or at picnic tables on the porch and outside. Sweet tea, soft drinks and specialty bottled beverages, a selection of beers & wine, corn bread, homemade desserts and a sound track of roadhouse music complete the experience. If you can’t stay, order your food “to go.”
