“rated among the best 25 shorelines in the world”
Rated among the 25 best shorelines in the world by Conde Nast’s Traveler, Oval Beach has the right combination of sand dunes, seclusion and services that create its cachet. Discover it best by riding across the Kalamazoo River on a hand-pulled chain ferry from the town of Saugatuck, climbing 282 steps to Mount Baldhead, and descending onto the grassy coastal sands. Lifeguards, concession stand.
The stairs are a little intimidating from the bottom looking up. But when she get to the top the view, combined with your feeling of accomplishment, is well worth the effort. If you are frightened by Heights at all, be warned, you made feel a little unsteady at the top.
Located in a wooded area near the water. Very steep steps and the worker at the bottom said it's a 1 mile trek, not sure if that's both ways. There is water at the bottom and a beautiful view. It's not very disabled friendly, but it's a neat place.
We took the chain ferry over from downtown Saugatuck. It was an easy walk to the park but there are no sidewalks. Climbing the stairs was a great way to work off our ice cream and there is a great view of town from the top!
