“Lodging on the Avenue of Giants”
As of July 2018 the Redwood Times reported it is for sale with hopes of opening up again. The Scotia Inn offers historic lodging near the Avenue of the Giants. The inn has 22 lovely rooms decorated with antique and modern furniture. It has a gorgeous bridal suite, with its own private hot tub. Whether you are dining in our Pub, enjoying the festivities of a wedding or banquet, or staying the night in one of our charming rooms, we plan to make your visit to The Scotia Inn as memorable as the breath-taking Redwoods on the Avenue of the Giants. The first inn at this location was constructed in 1888 (when the Avenue of the Giants was the main road in Humboldt County). This inn was the only hub of activity in the area for years and became a stagecoach stop between the Bay Area and Eureka. This structure burned down in the early 1900’s and was replaced in 1923. The first unit of the new Mowatoc Hotel (later named Scotia Inn) was constructed in 1923. In 1924, a second unit of the hotel was completed, providing 135 rooms for company workers, guests and tourists. The name Mowatoc and the diamond architectural motif on the front of the Hotel relates back to the local Modoc Indians. The name Mowatoc was used until the late 1940’s when it was then changed to Scotia Inn. Allegedly haunted by a ghost the employees call Frank, who occupies the top floor, there are reports of ghostly footsteps, noises and voices. People also claim that there is the ghost of a little boy playing with a ball that is occasionally seen.
