“An essential ghost town!”

Sego is a ghost town in Grand County, Utah, United States. It lies in the narrow, winding Sego Canyon, in the Book Cliffs some 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Thompson Springs. Formerly an important eastern Utah coal mining town, Sego was inhabited about 1910–1955. The town is accessed via the grade of the Ballard & Thompson Railroad, a spur from the Denver and Rio Grande Western built by the founders of the town to transport the coal. Quite a few buildings and old bridges still remain, this is an essential stop for ghost town enthusiasts!

I loved it. The photo above was taken before 2011. That building (boarding house) is now a pile of wooden debris. There are two rusted 50s vehicles and a fridge nearby. One stone building (the general store) stands with no roof or windows. Apparently, much of the town was raided in the 70s which brought with it much of the town's destruction. There is an abandoned house that is relatively intact slightly before you reach Sego at the narrow road carved into rock. It is very eerie, since you are miles away from the interstate and any signs of life.

Both Sego canyon and Sego ghost are amazing and well worth the stop. I suggest visiting Cisco as well, as it's a completely different ghost town experience with a very different atmosphere.
Be careful when driving as water washed away some parts of the dirt track, so the ride can be a bit bumpy.
As someone mentioned earlier, the wooden houses fell over and look like a pile of debris.
There is a very interesting graveyard nearby, you'll see it on the way back.

Must see spot for any Roadtripper! The Ghost Town was interesting but the best part of this detour is the ancient rock art of the agreement people from over 1000 years ago! Forget the rusty mine from the 1920's... The petroglyphs and pictograms look like aliens from outer space, super trippy and museum worthy👽👍🏼

I saw most of what bsedwebt described except for the falling down building, when I went there was a pile of debris that looked like it had once been a building but as far as a town there was none when I got there. The earthen dwellings, the car and railroad bridge was still there and I also found the remnants of an old mine shaft but no real buildings or what I would describe as any sort of town. The drive is still worth it though the canyon itself is beautiful and the cliff drawings were interesting.

Cool old beat up car in weeds, several earthen dwellings still around, falling down building, railroad bridges, etc.. road is passible with a 2wd in good weather but very narrow with few places to turn around. There is a small town cemetery and some nice cliff drawings before actually getting to the old town.

This was my favorite stop. Really neat off the beaten path. Felt a little like the "hills have eyes" but the kids loved it.
