“key works from every moment of Dali's career”

"In St. Petersburg, Florida there's a museum that will certainly cause you to double-take. The Dali Museum houses a treasure trove of works from the artist's prolific career. Much of the collection includes works collected by Reynolds and Eleanor Morse. The Morses' became enamoured with Dali's works when they saw one of his traveling exhibits in 1942 at the The Cleveland Museum of Art. They bought their first Dali painting in 1943. It was "Daddy Longlegs of the Evening, Hope!" That same year they met Dali and his wife and became lifelong friends.

The museum itself opened in 2011 and reflects the artist in every way possible. From the many galleries dedicated to to his works to the design of the building and its the interior. Over 1,000 glass triangles create an undulating geodesic wave that wraps around the thick and imposing concrete walls. The $36 million dollar museum was designed by Yann Weymouth, who was also instrumental in helping design the glass pyramid at The Louvre.

There are several small salons along the outer walls, and natural light pours into them from skylights.

According to The Dali Museum:

"The new building combines the rational with the fantastical: a simple rectangle with 18-inch thick hurricane-proof walls out of which erupts a large free-form geodesic glass bubble known as the “enigma”. The “enigma”, which is made up of 1,062 triangular pieces of glass, stands 75 feet at its tallest point, a twenty-first century homage to the dome that adorns Dali’s museum in Spain. Inside, the Dali houses another unique architectural feature – a helical staircase – recalling Dali’s obsession with spirals and the double helical shape of the DNA molecule."

Outside there's a garden overlooking the waterfront. The Mathematical Garden invites visitors to "experience the relationship between math and nature." There's also a labyrinth to roam around and explore. There's also a sizeable museum store and a Spanish cafe." - Roadtrippers

When you think of Dali, you think of the melting clock painting, but Dali has painted soooo much more and all of it is available for viewing at this museum. The paintings get much weirder than the melting clock, too. There are three, really large floors of exhibits and an outside "garden" area that I highly recommend. The garden contains a maze area that I remember thinking made this museum really fun as a kid. Tickets are a bit pricey (around $20 for adults) and you should probably plan to be there for a solid 3-4 hours if you want to see everything.

This is a wonderful museum with a beautiful collection by Dali. I have traveled to many museums throughout the world and I would rank this in the top. The audio tour is free which I would definitely recommend for a more informative experience. The view is also gorgeous from this museum. After our tour we enjoyed some nice wine and espresso in their cafe. We also bought many gifts in their large gift shop.

I have been to this museum three times and I am always appalled by Dali's portraits! Plus I really liked the new exhibit featuring Picasso's works! Two legendary artists in the same place! :)

If you can get your tickets online you can skip a bunch of the line. Most people are buying tickets and then go right in. Also, it's 10 time more busy on the weekend. Go on a weekday

One of this country's great museums dedicated to a single artist. A treasure chest of art and an architectural jewel.

Tickets to this wonderful museum are $10 on Thursdays after 5 pm. Check out specifics on the museum website. The crowds are much larger then, of course. Free guided tours are very informative.

I've been to both old and new! The new one is really great(although I still have a soft spot for the old one). A great collection by a great artist!

Fantastic place. They just had the works of Disney and Dali as well as Destino. Always cool. Buy your tickets online, on a weekend in the summer you will be waiting outside in the Florida heat (or rain)
