“discover the wild side of NYC”
Gateway National Recreation Area's three park units all trace the rich history of the nation and harbor. Historic forts, former airports, recreation areas and America's oldest operating lighthouse tell fascinating stories of defense, aviation firsts, navigational safety and healthy living. Gateway invites you to hike, bike, fish, camp or swim this summer. The park's 26,000 acres, crossing two states and three NYC boroughs, combine military and aviation history with the tranquility of nature and outdoor recreation. Get away to Gateway this spring and summer! We have made great progress since Hurricane Sandy hit last fall. Although there is still a lot of work to do, all of our lifeguarded beaches are open for the season. Safety concerns keep a few areas closed, such as the beaches at Fort Tilden. Find out what you can do, where you can go and what permits are available.
