“A Park in the Green Mountains!”

Welcome to Smugglers’ Notch State Park. The famous Smugglers’ Notch is a narrow pass through the Green Mountains. Lined with 1,000-foot cliffs, the winding road is closed in winter. In the earlier days, only a footpath and trail for horses existed here. In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson passed an embargo act forbidding American trade with Great Britain and Canada. This was a severe hardship for northern Vermonters, since Montreal was closer than other markets in the US. Many local people continued illegal trade with Canada, herding cattle and carrying other goods through the Notch. Later, fugitive slaves used the Notch as an escape route to Canada. During the Prohibition years, liquor was smuggled from Canada over the improved road built in 1922. Smugglers’ Notch State Park was relocated in 2003. The new campground features sites that are further spread out, a new restroom facility that incorporates alternative energy and a location that gives easy access to Bingham Falls. All of the historic structures originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps were carefully relocated and restored, preserving the work of these pioneering conservationists.

We stayed in a lean to. It was nice because it rained a little. The sites are private, clean, and in the woods. The bathrooms are spotless and even have house plants for decoration. The whole campground is so well taken care of! There are little gardens around with flowers blooming. And the whole place is so clean!
We visited Smugglers Notch to rock climb.

If you are towing a trailer and plan on visiting this campground do not approach it from the north using Highway 108 because that route will take you through a one hundred yard long, very tight single lane, two way road that is Smugglers Notch. Don't ask me how I know!

There is a southern approach to this campground using the same Highway 108 that does not require going through The Notch. You will see warning signs against proceeding with a semi-tractor trailer truck, probably due to some very steep road grades, but it is entirely doable with an adequately power pickup truck.

The campground is very well maintained. Clean restrooms and pay showers so bring some quarters. There is a nature trail around the campground and a very nearby waterfall hike.

Our only ding against this campground is the fact they have a sizable mouse population. We spent the next week evicting five mice from our trailer. They were our first and hopefully last uninvited guests after being on the road full-time for over two years and visiting 147 different campsites.

We did not camp, just drove through in the fall. We entered through the Northern gateway and exited through the Southern gateway. Very beutiful fall colours, not a lot of chances to pull over to take pictures during the narrow drive so be aware of that! Pull over when you can and it is safe!

This appropriately named state park is home to Smugglers’ Notch, which is nestled between 1,000 foot cliffs in the Green Mountains. The park offers great hiking trails and camping sites (with modern facilities, no less!) for nature lovers to enjoy. It is important to note that most sites are only accessible by foot, so this may not be the spot for RV campers.

The park’s season typically runs from mid- to late-May through mid-October, before winter takes hold of the park and it closes for the cold weather season.
