“A common field one day. A field of honor forever.”

The Flight 93 National Memorial is located at the site of the crash of United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked in the September 11 attacks, in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, about 2 miles north of Shanksville, and 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The memorial was made to honor the passengers and crew of Flight 93, who stopped the terrorists from reaching their target by fighting the hijackers. A temporary memorial to the 40 victims was established soon after the crash, and the first phase of the permanent memorial was completed, opened, and dedicated on September 10, 2011. The design for the memorial is a modified version of the entry Crescent of Embrace by Paul and Milena Murdoch. A concrete and glass visitor center was opened on September 10, 2015, situated on a hill overlooking the crash site and the white marble Wall of Names. An observation platform at the visitor center and the white marble wall are both aligned beneath the path of Flight 93.

We were caught by surprised at the size of this property and memorial. What a beautiful and respectful way to remember the sacrifices made that day by 40 brave souls. the layout is artistic and intentional and heartbreaking and stunning.
We spent an hour and a half there and felt almost rushed, so give yourself time. Everything is so meaningful and we found ourselves pausing to soak in the moments. The visitor center was not open yet (we were early) so I would imagine that would add some time too. They are also working on the "Tower of Voices" memorial near the entrance, which I would love to come back to see. It will be a wind-chime tower with a chime for each of the 40 passengers.
I cannot say enough about this spot. I think everyone capable of making the visit should.
no fee, restrooms, walking paths, easy to find

Living so close it really is a shame we hadn't visited sooner. The visitor's center plays footage as well as showcases memorabilia from 9-11. It really took me right back to that day. The fear, the heartbreak, the anger it was all right there on the surface again. Then you walk or drive down to the crash site which is makes by an open field with a single rock. It really was extremely emotional seeing all the names of the hero's on that flight. I highly recommend this memorial for anyone who was affected by the events of that tragic day.

We stopped here on our trip to the North East Coast from Ohio. It was very well done. Obviously, it had a very somber feel. It reminded me where I was when 9/11 happened, and that tragic day. I listened to 3 of the last calls 2 passengers and 1 flight attendant made to their loved ones, and that was very hard to hear. There are lots of walking trails, and it's very spread out. A very good way to pay respect to our fellow citizens fallen to acts of terrorism.

Fantastic memorial. Awesome job by NPS capturing the emotions of the day and the aftermath. Not many historical places bring me to tears but this did. Perhaps an overlooked asset of the visitor center is the small box of tissues at the end... you'll need them!

The visitor's center is perfect. It is small but does an amazing job laying out the time line of the events of the day. It honors the sacrifice and lives of the crew and passengers of flight 93. The memorial site is minimal, peaceful and reverent, honoring the enormity of the loss. We were glad to see so many families bringing their children to remember.

Seriously, one of the most moving things I’ve ever seen. The grounds are beautiful, the museum tells the story perfectly, and the whole park is perfect for reflection. Absolutely, a must see!

United Airlines Flight 93 was a domestic scheduled passenger flight that was hijacked by al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001, as part of the September 11 attacks. It crashed into a field near the Diamond T. Mine in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania, near Indian Lake and Shanksville, during an attempt by some of the passengers to regain control, killing all 44 people aboard including the four hijackers. No one on the ground was injured.

We did not spend a long time here with our two eleven-year-olds, but it is a beautiful park. Obviously, the importance is why you go, and it is strange being in such a recently historic location. It was a great way to have conversations with our young children. There is a bit of walking involved, but that is not a negative for us at all.

Beautiful memorial of one of the worst days in our history. It is heartbreaking but worth the out-of-the-way trip.
