“the location of the last robbery by the famous Bonnie & Clyde”
The town of Stuart, Iowa is the location of the LAST bank robbery by the famous duo Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in April, 1934. The First National Bank closed in 1944 and still stands downtown and houses offices. The window at the top of the old bank building has been updated so that it is white lettering on the glass. It makes it easier to read about the Bank Robbed by Bonnie and Clyde.
Did some reading on Bonnie and Clyde before we got to this stop- turns out they didn't really rob a lot of banks, mostly gas stations and convenience stores, so the fact that this is "the last bank" they robbed is kind of insignificant. It's also now a hair salon, which is depressing... That being said, it's still kind of exciting to see a little bit of history, and if you drive north from there and take 44 which runs parallel to 80, it's a really beautiful alternative to your typical highway scenery.
I wish there was more there, or even that the building was dedicated to the event. The fact that there was a business there in it's place and really only a sign in the window made it not quite the experience it could have been. However, this is still a cool spot, just to be there and know some of the history. It would have been okay if there were some places nearby to stop, but everything was closed and it seemed like a sleepy little town.
Stopped on our way past on I-80 for a diversion. This would be really interesting if there was anything to see. There is just a sign in a window. The building itself is now a hair salon.
If you are a history buff, then the little plaque on the side of the building that was once a bank, then a police station and now a hair salon may impress you. I on the other hand was disappointed. I kinda wished the cupcake shop across the street was open to make the stop memorable. Adorable little town and a very quick stop off the highway.
Agree with the comments now, the building is now a hair salon and only had a wee little sign at the top of the building. The building now is a tan brown colour now. I'm glad I didn't drive a million miles to see it, but was good to stop and get a picture!
We had a hard time finding this spot. The bank is now a hair salon. There is just a sign, about the hair saloon, that states it was the sight of a Bonnie and Clyde. It was hard to see if you weren't looking up for it. The salon had a note posted that they did not want to be bothered with historical questions. Not too thrilling. Pretty beat down and dirty little town.
