“the highest point in South Carolina”
Sassafras Mountain - South Carolina Highpoint is a 0.2 mile out and back trail located near Sunset, South Carolina that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for birding, hiking & scenic driving and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
The top of Sassafras - where there is an elevated viewing platform (a much smaller version of Clingman's Dome or Mt. Mitchell in NC, if you've been to them), can be driven to. It is NOT located where the icon is shown, but another few miles, at the border of NC/SC. Great views in all directions! Worth a side trip to the top if you're passing nearby. There is a gravel parking lot, then a hike of a few hundred yards to the platform. There is also a nicely maintained Port-O-Potty. Platform open one hour before sunrise and closed one hour after sunset.
